I found this on a different (closed) thread. http://commons.erau.edu/cgi/viewcont...0&context=ntas

Clearly it's the RAA's bullet point propaganda and rationale for quashing the 1500/ATP rule and it states their assertion that it would be much safer for the entire nation if regional airlines were allowed to hire pilots who had less than ATP minimums.

The document leads me to two thoughts, which I would like to share

1) If 500 hour pilots were so much safer and easier to train than 1500 - 3000 hours pilots,...... why did all of the regional airlines have posted minimums of 1500 hours, (3000 "competitive"/"preferred") when the pilot supply was not so tight. And

2) If low time pilots, who have not had the time to develop all of those bad habits, are so superior to more experienced pilots,........ WHY DO THE MAJOR AIRLINES NOT TAKE THOSE SAME HIGHLY STRUCTURED AND LESS BAD HABITED 500 HOURS RIDDLE and UND GRADS?????

The regional industry knows they wont be around in 10 years unless the pilot mills are in full swing. What they fail to see is that regardless of the hour requirements, young people refuse to spend the money to make less than 50k a year in this profession anymore. Really, to go from 500 hours to 1500 hours is only 1.5 years of flight instructing at a busy 141 school. So is it really the 1500 hours deterring people from entering? No, it's the costs involved, and return on investment in the short to medium term. Young people have wisened up on this.

This. The internet exposed the con-game for what it was. The problem in the past was young people (and their co-signing parents) knew nothing about the industry other than the general public mis-conceptions. They didn't know anybody to ask other than the slick hucksters they encountered when the first inquired about training.

In most other blue collar trades, the employer pays for specific training. This job is no different, let's get the bar back where it belongs. Considering 40% of current student loans are either late or outright default, don't see the loan status changing.

I am not saying I want this, but if the right palms are greased, anything can happen. Read about Jack Abramoff and the book he wrote about the corruption in lobbying.

The victims of Colgan, have lobbied together, the big corporations can only do what they want in a vacuum. Lots of people fly, and they want it to be to an airport runway, not a house in the 'burbs, onto a guy watching tv.....
This is not going away anytime soon. The industry is trying the cheap stuff first, politicians are relatively cheap to purchase, flight training/experience, not so much.....

I don't know about this. I see a LOT of flight schools begging for CFIs all over the place. There's got to be a boat load of these "young people" who are dying to get in...stupid...but they're dying to get in with the regionals.

When you say stuff like that, you're pretty much calling all of us that went to the regionals stupid. $22.81/hr was my first year pay in 2005. And I was beyond thankful for the job.

Job prospects were a lot less back then than they were now. The logjam of 9/11 had finally started to clear. Pay has only recently gone up; I anticipate more and more people getting into flying as long as pay and movement stay fairly steady.

I have no idea your background but I have to assume you either are at a regional or were at one since you post in this forum so much. Pot meet kettle?

Simple reason. Chinese students. Everywhere I know is full of them. There are hardly any Americans in training right now.
