This is what I love about the Guard-promoting enlisted people who have worked hard and shown dedication to their unit and the country.

There's no shortage in the military I literally just got told thanks but no thanks from the reserves. Recruiter had 35 packets for a board this year that only required 3 slots. Trying for the guard before I age out this year but the reality is they'll select some enlisted guy with a private before someone off the street and there's a good shot they'll medical out or wash out before completing UPT. Hardly a shortage in the military.

Wow. Not to pry too much, but what was in his background that got him hired with 20 years of non-flying? Was he a sim instructor or private flyer while away?

If you really want to fly with a Guard/Reserve unit, you'd do better taking any slot (admin clerk, supply, anything) in a unit you want to fly in and apply for a pilot training position after you've established a good reputation in the unit.

From my experience, Guard babies have done better than off the street UPT hires.
