Quote: Jesus, he said he doesn't want to be characterized for not staying - an excellent point - and you jump on here and insult all of us who do stay.

It's not about us, it's about our crew and our customers. I'll go way out on a limb and say that you can't see that because your world is all about you.

Enjoy your awesomeness.
How many Pilots sit on the Flight Deck, Top Bug. Last time I checked their were 2 and parking your self inflated ego at the cockpit door making the other Pilot wait is rude, plain and simple and all about YOU.

My suggestion at the top of the thread was to do your little dance on the last flight of the id or at an intermediate stop so the other guy doesn’t have to wait for you. Doing it prior to the layover is selfish and all about YOU.

Doesn’t that seem fair?

Well said sir. The occasional selfish immaturity of our clan is embarrassing at times.

I posted my reasoning earlier. You and I completely disagree on this one. And not to digress into a fallacy, but almost all of the folks who've posted on this thread agree with the viewpoint I shared.

That should tell you something.

The original scenario I had in mind when I started this thread was long day, delays now you’re down to less than 11 hours overnight. You’re tired and just want to get to your room. I get customer service but at that point lets bail.

35 years ago I was a young buck working at a charter firm based in DC. There was a whole slew of alumni from that outfit who had matriculated to the commuters and then again on to American, Piedmont, TWA, UAL etc. All of them hired at majors while in their early 30's.

All of them were pep-rally eager beavers and were upset about the dyspeptic demeanor of the old Captains they were now flying with..." they should just quit!" etc etc etc.

Fast forward 30+ years. All of those guys are now today's old Captains. While I have lost touch with most of them, I'd bet 20 bucks that most of them grab their stuff and go after the beacon is turned off.

Just some perspective.

Great thread. My .02: Those that want to bail at the first opportunity please do so. There is a good chance people who are adamant about this probably wear their uniforms in a sloppy fashion and don’t represent the airline well anyway. Nobody should hold back another pilot from leaving but I kinda think it is nice for one of us to say goodbye. I need to start doing it more myself.
I get a kick out of all the Delta comparisons. If we had our largest hub in a “right to work” state along with our headquarters there I’m sure we would be more profitable as well. We don’t. Our hubs are in very expensive cities and therefore we need to work harder at being reliable and stepping up our customer service if we ever really aim to narrow that gap. Our employees, absent a very small percentage are unionized. I’m proud of that. I have no desire to emulate “Delta’s Airline”. I want us to be more profitable and our checks to reflect that every February.

Broad generalizations without a factual basis to prove a point fail. But hey Bro, I'll give you a big ole Texas "A" for effort.

The only people that care about pilots saying goodbye to passengers are the pilots! I've never once heard a passenger complain that the pilots weren't standing there to say bye. I can't imagine someone saying "I got off the plane and the pilot wasn't there so I'm going to fly Southwest next time".

This whole thread is ridiculous. This is why we can't have nice things.

“Good chance” means better than 50% chance. Maybe you don’t fit into that category and it certainly isn’t personal. I’d just rather have someone who wants to be there standing at the cockpit door saying goodbye vs someone who doesn’t as it will be obvious that the sincerity isn’t real. I also said I’d never block another pilot from leaving after the parking checklist is complete. Heck I’ve been that guy many times.
Oh, thanks for “the big ole Texas A for effort” comment. Broad generalizations and all....

Quote: This is exactly what I’m referring to. If you want to exercise a little customer care, you’re a “Marvin” on this forum. That’s a truly sad state of affairs in our profession. After several decades of Tiltons, Smiseks and furloughs, I get it. Nobody on here is suggesting that one HAS to stay until the end of deplaning if they are not so inclined. If that was the case, this would be a different thread (like the 45 min report). If you want to bail, bail! No issues here. There isn’t enough room in the damned Guppy for two pilots to stand there anyway!

As a commuter, if I have a tight commute, I’m GONE. If my FO has a tight commute, he/she better be GONE. If it’s the last leg, get on the road if you’re driving! But as the Captain, I have earned the right to stay and say goodbye if I so desire. If the FO wants to head to the van and hang out there, no worries! If he/she wants to get to the layover and grab a cab (which per the contract will not be reimbursable), knock yourself out! Take the van and leave me stranded? We will need to have a serious heart to heart if we are going to continue to fly together.
Couple thoughts here from a 24 year 737 Cap. Sure it’s nice if you choose to hang around. However, the Cap has no more say to the crew transport than the F/O. If you choose to hang around, you’re outside of your authority to expect the F/O to sit and wait if he’s at the curb ready to go. The onus falls on you to expense a cab, because you are volunteering to work for free. If you want to change that, you should advocate that we be paid for that extra half hour. And yes, a full guppy with wheelchairs can easily take that long after brakes are set.
