You dutifully send it via ACARS at the appropriate time; then, when you get to the gate, you still have to call ops for a parking crew, then call for a jetway driver, and one of the crewmembers always has to run up the jetway to inform the agent that you need a wheelchair (or 12, if it's an inbound from Florida).
No, wait... There is a use for the "In Range" report:
You get to your departure gate and ask the agent what time your aircraft is due in. She says, "It's in range".
And it arrives 45 minutes later.
