Any insights on equipment selection for a new hire wanting ORD as a base? Commuter (3 hour drive or 1 flight). Kinda looking for info on reserve times specifically, but input on upgrades (325 prior 121) and anything else I may not know to ask about would be helpful. Also any basic advice or info on crashpads there would be helpful too (cost, train, uber, etc).

Thanks in advance!

The following is just pertaining to ORD: the 175 will arrive in January, as such nothing is known about it right now, number of lines, length of reserve, number of TDYs, all unknown. Also the effect that it will have on the other airframes is unknown until a bit later this month when the bid packet comes out. I expect the CRJ will take a hit and the 145 will take a small hit. Right now reserve times on the 145 are incredibly fast, some guys hit it just right, got off IOE, bid and got a line, so basically no reserve. The situation is very dynamic, but I think you can count on less than 3 month on reserve with the 145. CRJ is similar, but with the shrinking fleet, and the incoming 175, I would plan on a worst case scenario of a little longer, maybe 5 months. Also a very dynamic situation, and these numbers are predictions if you got hired today. People keep asking about upgrade times on various equipment. There must be some confusion out there in this. You can upgrade to any equipment your seniority can hold. You can be an FO on the 145, then bid for CA in the 175. So there is no 'faster upgrade'
My suggestion is go with the 145 if you can, key benefits: most critical coverage around the network, in every base, and almost guaranteed to be the first airplane into any new bases, huge fleet, most variety in lines.

True, so especially for you guys coming with the 1000 hrs 121, don't pick the 175, your throwing away the 5k and you probably won't even get to the cockpit before you get displaced to CA

If you take the 145 or CRJ at Indoc then you get an extra 5k check (less tax)

I understand QOL may be poor for someone who is hired now and upgrades right away (prior 121), however I do live near LGA. What kind of life would that be on the 145? How many days off? What sort of flying? How much flying and how much sitting airport reserve? Just looking for educated guesses I suppose.

For a bit of background, I don’t mind hustling, even coming from the great qol I enjoy now right seat at another regional. I almost feel too comfortable there and I haven’t finished my degree. I almost feel like I’m lulling myself into being ok with working where I am. Mainline is the goal. I also have crushing flight school debt that I could greatly improve with the $45K bonus they’re offering some people. Yes I know it’s taxed. Still helps a lot. I see no chance of being able to afford a house or getting married any time soon with this debt burden which are two things I’d like to do soon.
