Guys were going to mow cost carriers without upgrading. Eventually regionals can only get so big due to scope and how many airplanes they have (over simplified but you get the idea), meaning we won’t hire infinitely and guys have to move on somewhere. Last year SAPA said only ≈150 guys (out of over 5000) would be approaching mandatory retirement in the next couple years. So in my mind all this hiring seems to anticipate attrition (to majors and LCC). It also seems to me that they want it have a lot of pilots trained and in place for all the 175 and CRJ700 coming online in the next year (around 50 aircraft). Whether these planes are just a 1 for 1 replacement of aging fleets, or CRJ200s, or perhaps (but hopefully not) at the expense of another carrier’s flying (since scope limits large RJs, there can only be a finite number of 175s and 900s) is a topic that can be speculated endlessly. At the end of the day, I don’t think we’re hiring just for the sake of building the seniority list. Prior to COVID, a new hire could hold almost any base on any equipment within a year of IOE, the exceptions being PDX and SAN.

Now, whether you’d be on eternal reserve or not…at one point bases like DFW would have 75-80 lineholders and 30-35 reserves. You’d wait a while to get in, then end up being the very bottom guy. You’re home based now, but 30 people are ahead of you. Meanwhile you just transferred out of Detroit and that same month DTW had about 160 lineholders and about 5 total reserves. Always a moving target.
Interesting how dynamic things are. But as you explained, it seems to me like all that movement can backfire fast and you may find yourself stuck for good huh.
After all this covid crap and first flying job, finances are more than fragile, so not sure if it'd be doable. Oh well.

So in regards to schedules, would it be possible to have a schedule where I have the same days on/off every week or build a schedule where I got some specific days off every time? i.e: Have Thursday’s and Sunday’s off

What options, if any, would I have to get something like that? How long (seniority) would that take?

Thanks in advance for your responses, they are greatly appreciated!
Recommend emailing your recruiter and asking to talk to a mentor directly about what this job entails and it’s impact on your personal life. By simply asking that question (same days off every week...) I’m led to believe you’re making a bad career choice.

This may not seem like a helpful answer, but trust me, it is.

A senior reserve holder can get most if not all the days off they want. I’d say once hiring ramps up maybe after a year here and you’ll be able to hold whatever days off you want as a new hire on reserve (at a junior base). As a line holder I’d say you’ll start getting 80% the days off you want at about ~40% as a lineholder depending on what the people above you bid. Now if you want Friday-Sunday off that will obviously go more senior since those older folk tend to have a family and are likely going to bid that every time.

I can’t disagree with any of this. However, you’re a corporate pilot so you’ll be upgrading around that one year time frame. Back to the bottom.
Then you’ll move on to mainline and- back to the bottom for a longer time. Perhaps you’ll upgrade at Delta. Or United. Or American. Or Spirit. Back to the bottom.

If you stay regional FO.... Sure. But not all of us can recommend that. I can’t. That’s why I still recommend talking with someone with whom you can reveal your goals (and esp desired income) to chart forward.

More then a few leave 121 for the flexibility you may seek.

Default Training Timeline E-175

Hello,

I recently accepted a July 20th ERJ class date and would appreciate any information. I have looked through the forums and have only been able to find information dating back to precovid. Can anyone going through the training course post covid provide some insight?

1. During the virtual indoc, is this when they expect you to complete the CBT or is that after you complete the 6 days of indoc?

2. How long is the period after indoc before you are flown out to Denver for systems?

3. Is there much of a delay between systems validation and sims? How are the half days for systems ground working out?

Thank you!

Denver / No, they just use ORD and DEN 175 crews to cover the flying. A rumor went around that 175 IAH was about to happen nearly a year ago, but that’s all but gone, sadly.

You will start on reserve, which is 18 days a month. It is in 3 to 5 day blocks. Expect weekends for a while too. Expect 3 5-day blocks and a 3-day block to reach 18 days. So expecting Sundays and Thursdays off won’t happen.

This ^

And no matter what seniority, there are certain criteria that need to be met to build a reserve line. Getting the same (non consecutive) two days off in a week will NEVER happen on reserve.

could possibly done as a line holder. But even then you need to be in the top 20% and hope that the trip mix has the right pairings that work.

I’ll wait and try to get some wide body flying to international destinations and not settle for a consolation prize of a runner up, second tier lower paid airline.

Wow. You’re a moron.
