I went through two long training events (Brasilia and CRJ) in SLC without a car. I never regretted not bringing mine. Lots of people in your class will have a car. There's a train to take you downtown from the hotel. Also car rentals in SLC are dirt cheap. I was able to rent a car for $12/day to go hiking up in the mountains on the weekends. If you rent a car every single weekend it probably still wouldn't even come close to the cost of gas to drive from Arkansas and back.

A car helped keep my sanity during the long training event. Mostly for good fresh food and to head off to exercise. The mountains around SLC are beautiful to hike in or ride a bike around. I don't know if I'd drive all the way from AR, though. Renting one a few days at a time sounds like a good plan.
