the pay scales at mainland are not based on fast upgrade, you make a decent income as a 8 year FO there

did that answer your question?

Couple of questions - I'm a 28-year military fighter pilot, retiring, got an interview with SkyWest. Interesting discussions, your "language" may as well be Swahili!

- When you are in training, how do they determine what base you go to? Can you request a base? Is that part of the interview process?

- If you get hired, is there a contractual requirement to work for the company for a certain amount of time? I've heard that if you get a call from a major you can just walk away - is this true?

Thanks in advance folks!

Why wouldn't you just walk away if you got a call from a major anyway?

I agree with Hermann's thoughts.

Ask yourself this, can you realistically retire as a regional first officer? No. Can you as major airline first officer retire as a first officer? Yes.

Don't do it, go to a major.

Lol, I absolutely would if I could. Haven't flown USAF since 2006, so I've been told I have to get current/qualified at a regional to be marketable to a major. I was told that by the guys at Emerald Coast Interview Prep, and they are pretty well plugged in across the board at regionals and majors.

Any good thoughts on the two questions?

I was a new hire at SkyWest last summer with a guy that flew 135's in the AF. He got current, and flew 4 months on the line in the Brasilia before getting picked up by Southwest. Your mileage may vary!

Your base is bid on and awarded based on your seniority in your class and which domiciles have a need for pilots. Your class seniority at Skywest is based on your social security number (Numerical order from low to high, last four digits). No training contract at Skywest.
Where are you hoping to get based? You wouldn't be the first ex-military guy to come here. Flew with a retired USAF Colonel recently, fascinating guy. Wished I could have listened to his tales for a few more days.

Not that I care, but know that any business that repeatedly gets burned in some fashion is going to set itself up not to get burned in the future.
Do what you need but know that if a host military new hires bail in four months, your military buddies behind you might not look like the best candidates in the interview room in the future.

All of us would bail in 4 months if a major called. I wouldn't feel bad about doing it either. The justification for the regional pay scale is that they're supposed to be a stepping stone to the majors. No one should be told they should feel bad about taking that step no matter how long they stay here.

If they want new hires to feel loyal to the company they're going to have to pay them a bit more than 18k the first year.
