Default EAS questioned

CBS Morning News just ran a piece "exposing" the cost to taxpayers of federal subsidies for virtually empty EAS flights. I'm posting this in the Skywest thread because the piece followed a United/Skywest flight from DEN to JMS, Devil's Lake ND. There were also brief shots of CRJs in the Skywest livery, and a sound bite from the congressmen who wants to eliminate the subsidies. All in all it had a critical tone.
Just FYI.

EAS should be done away with in the lower 48, but as many times as these stories come out, nothing ever happens.

We have 1.

It's used to keep pay at the 50 seat level for CA's going through upgrades/training events/etc.

Yes, that's dirty, and we know the mighty SKW would never do that.

But seriously bro... you post about us in your thread too?

Yeah ... Skywest would never pay their pilots' soft time at CRJ-200 rates! Oh ... wait ...

Congressmen want it cut, untill it affects the district they represent.

EAS makes a great media expose sound bite for the odd congressperson whose district is not impacted (say an urban district in a major metro area). But too many other congress critters do have EAS and might suffer in the polls if they shwacked it. They can always parade out the special cases, the granny who needs to travel to OKC each week for chemo, etc.

That pesky EAS service is for the annoying farmers who pay lots of taxes and produce the stuff that goes on the Subway 6" $5.00 special that feeds F/Os around the country. Heaven forbid that those pesky farmers would want to take their kids to their cancer treatment appointments or gasp, on vacation.

He was being sarcastic, dumbass.

EAS isnt going anywhere, most of these communities are represented by GOP who want it gone until their people complain to them that they have to drive 3 hours from PIR to FSD now to get to DEN just to connect from there. Not all these examples are a mere 40 mile drive like the folks in Lancaster. Alot of times its cheaper to fly from these EAS airports, for example a flight from JMS to DEN was 395 and FAR to DEN was about 520.
