Because right now there is no official way to contact you. That is why the company wants this so bad. If you happen to answer your phone on a long layover on reserve, you get to do more flying and not get paid any more. While the rest of your crew goes to the overnight, you get to do a couple more trips or get reflowed away from the trip you are on. This is usually limited to reserves, but in the summer of 2011 we were short on pilots and in June alone, I had 3 of my 4 trips reflowed.
So now we are making an official way to contact you while on your trip and making the pilots pay because crew support is inefficient. Basically we have taken all the line holders and putting it into policy that you can be reflowed as if you were on reserve. This will be really bad for every pilot. If we had proper reserve staffing, there would be no need for this.

You are under no obligation to accept any changes to your schedule after you've checked in for an assigned pairing (unless RDY is assigned), or while you're not on a RAP. If you check in for a PM 4 day trip and and hour later they start blowing up your phone wanting you to accept a 515AM show on your next set of reserve days you don't have to accept it. Let it go. It will vanish eventually, they're just seeing if you will bite.
Or a standup, or a red eye...exc. If the EFB locks you out unless you accept changes they can have even more control over your life than they already do. At least with the current setup they have to at least halfway make up their mind at least a small time in advance. With this system they could constantly change your assignments giving you min rest and turing everyone into 24 hour reserves. AM and PM would be out the window even more than it already is.
Then there's the issues with the lineholders. 30 hour overnights, turns getting added on MDG days, exc.
SAPA should be asking for the moon if they're even considering this.

Anyone who gives a damn and tries to make things better gets burned out and quits SAPA or SW. We have 2 reps that I can think of now that actually listen to the group and try to do the right thing. Oh well, I guess when the brewing chitstorm (TM CCB) hits high enough on the seniority list, it will be too late.
Goodbye bidding and hello showing up at the airport and spinning the wheel of reflow!! Those extra two hours will be awesome on those rare times they make it on my check. It's not like we ever have payroll issues around here.

I'm curious what ASA/XJT discussions they are having in regards to the EFB. Since our current president isn't as interested in having discussions with the sister MEC's as our previous one was, I don't imagine he has reached out to them. I don't need to ask, but I am sure that they do not have to be notified via EFB in their MOU.
I think it is a great idea to throw some vague pay guidelines in the EFB proposal since the company needs this and the pilot group will once again roll over. We don't have clear guidelines on cancels, and those that haven't had to deal with CS shenanigans for the past 8 or so years (SAPA EB) just think that CS will play nice. Based on the way CS treats reserves, all line holders just became reserves for an extra hour or two. I sure wish we had the ability and tools to tell the company no, or at least get something in return.

For the ERJ side of xjt (don't know if it's the same on the CRJ side), they cannot use the EFB for any notification.

Regarding the IAH base, is 100% of the flying done with the 700s?
How long before a new hire can hold a line there?
Thanks!
