Upgrade times

That's just the big unknown. Upgrading into OAK and LAX now carries a minimum of 6 months there without the ability to move around the system. Suppose you're a DAL guy and you choose the first available upgrade with the intent of working your way back east. The best you'll be able to do would be LAS and that's if you can hold the EBG there, otherwise you're stuck with OAK or LAX until the 6 months is up. And even then, suppose there's a big bypass and you bid into one of the ETOPS bases; I have no doubt that some guys will just wait it out until they can hold non-EBG base and bid into it ahead of you making you stuck out there even longer.
This EBG lock could be a bit of a PITA.

Really good point. Once the kiddo goes off to college or the Army or wherever kids go as long as it's not my house.. (summer 2024 ) I'd be happy to sell the house and rent a place in OAK for a while.
Until summer 2024 though, I'd have to think pretty hard about how a long term commute to those AM turn PM trips would affect the QOL.

Yep. I won't take an upgrade to OAK or LAX unless it looks like I can at least make it to Vegas ETOPS within a couple of months. The trips are terrible for commuting (generally AM turned PM) and the good ETOPS trips go senior.
Zero chance I am moving to either place. The 6 month lock is a real detractor. If the flying/manning ratio stays like it is now, I would much rather play the game as a senior FO or hold out and Lance.

Let's also remember it's not 6 months but 6 bid periods and no language that days the company has to offer a vacancy bid every month. As we go into contract negotiations the company could very well adhere to the contract verbatim and not offer any vacancy bids, at their own demise, for the entirety of the negotiations. Thus locking those in 3 bases there until they cry uncle.
that would be very brasen.
that would be very brasen.

Fact. Thanks for the correction.
SWAPA has rewritten the contract language for C2020 to bring this into line. It could be very ugly.

If memory serves we have had a vacancy bid EVERY month for the past several years with only 1 or 2 exceptions. A complete stop to vacancy bids would mean no hiring for years (unlikely) with ongoing retirements as well as the inevitable grievance as a complete stop would likely violate the status quo.

Won’t commute from the east to hold CA in OAK (or wherever). I can make up the difference in pay by picking up a few turns/month in OT or TTGA in my base. This is based on the current 10 year pay scale (roughly a $6K difference... needing to pick up 35ish TFP/month above LG at the 10 year FO rate). So, spend a few extra days/month driving to work to fly a few turns and come home every night, or commute cross country to sit reserve in OAK. With all the commuting and extra nights in a hotel, I won’t be interested in picking up trips in my own base when I am home... plus I would be low on the OT bidding food chain as a junior, out of base CA.
The OT/TTGA market is getting healthier. I’ll wait til I can hold CA in base (which thankfully is not ATL or MCO). Plus don’t want to get stuck out west when the music stops again. The risk you take really is the loss in LTD/LOL pay should you lose your medical.
