Asking for a friend, is there a set date for the next job opening or is it just as needed?

Anyone who has done any amount of long haul flying knows the toll it takes on your physical and mental state of being. It's not easy to do for a long time. Sustained circadian shifts destroy your body's internal clock and take a toll. It's easy to recover when you are young, but it's not as easy when you get older. I found that out when I went back to flying long haul in a previous life after taking a long break. What used to take me one sleep cycle to recover now took two or three.

At the legacy airlines, you have the option of switching back and forth, which is nice. I personally don't miss that type of flying and wouldn't be excited about junior schedules involving it. I am sure others would jump at the chance. That creates a nice ability to get some extra seniority in a category that you may not mind because it turns others off.

Options are good. Rationalizing flying the 737 for the rest of your career is ok, but let's face it, it would be nice to have a separate category of flying here.

If the window opens tomorrow- does anyone have any information/idea on how long it’ll be open?

I really don't get excited about it, and flying the MAX is about as exciting as having your wife of almost two decades put on a different shade of lipstick.

This airplane provides a very nice living for me and my family, and that's really all that matters. I love flying, but after 18 years, it's kinda hard to get excited about a 737. Even still, I still get a kick out of being cleared for a visual while high on downwind or high on base and needing to do that pilot sh*t to get down. I still get a kick out of doing crosswind landings. In other words, I still enjoy flying. I don't like some of the drama that comes with it, but in essence, it pays the bills, it enables me to have my toys and it still gives me some challenge. But the part that really makes or breaks the whole thing is the guy/gal sitting next to you. I'd rather fly with someone I really enjoy flying with in a 737, than some no-personality wretch in a 777/787/A350. This is where I think Southwest shines as the overwhelming majority of the guys and gals I fly with are fantastic people. I've come to expect that be the case with everyone I fly with, and that's my default presumption when I see a new name on the release.

Bottom line... I wouldn't leave an airline based on airplane type. My considerations would be commuting vs. not commuting, balancing the overall seniority list movement, the current and historical health of the airline, contractual and compensation comparisons (see the 'End of 2021 compensation' thread under Majors), and the type of flying that you really enjoy - do you like long haul or short haul, passenger vs. cargo, night vs. day, multiple time zones vs. staying within a couple of time zones. Now, having said that... upgrade time is and should be a consideration. While it is true that you can make really good coin at Southwest and that you can make captain wage as an FO, it does come at the expense of your quality of life and lifestyle because you'll be working a lot more than your counterparts for a lot longer, but then again, this is where we come back to commuting vs. not commuting. A junior captain a legacy may be based in NYC or SFO or LAX and you may be living in the middle of the country. Would you commute to be on reserve for 18 days a month on the east or west coast as a junior captain? How does the long call reserve mitigate the fact that you're on the hook for 18-19 days/month as a junior reserve captain vs. being an FO at Southwest and picking up around the times YOU want to work and making similar money? It's a highly individual question, but one thing for certain, at Southwest, they get their 10 lbs of flesh out of you in order to pay you well.

Just another perspective.

Thank you for that perspective! Extremely informative. Beyond the lifestyle- how do you feel about the multiple legs? I’ve been told these days it doesn’t go past 5 legs a day- is that true?

5 legs a day is pretty aggressive. 100% the person you’re flying with makes or breaks a trip - you could go to a really crappy place with a great person and have a great time. Vice versa holds true as well. Upside at SWA even with our “long haul” it’s a 6 hr flight - instead of a 10+, so if you and the other pilot don’t jive - it’s not quite as painful.

I flew a five leg day once, maybe 4 years ago. There aren't many. 4 leg days aren't so common either.

Where Southwest get's it's pound of flesh is having a long leg, then adding on to it. While your United friend flies IAD-PHX, overnights, then flies IAD-PHX, you'll do BWI-PHX-SMF. Then day 2 will be SMF-BWI-ALB-BWI. They always add a few short legs onto a long leg.

5 and 1 leg a day are kind of rare. Very decent mix of 2/3 leg days with an occasional 4 leg day. Decent mix, and I’d imagine if I had any seniority I would able to pick and choose a little better. Personally, I like the variety in that sense. One nice thing for me, when me and my wife were expecting, as we got closer to the end of the pregnancy I basically tried to fly trips that kept me closer to home. That tended to be the lots of legs a day trips because it meant that I stayed closer to home and could get there quicker if needed.

Multiple legs can be rough in the winter if deicing a lot. Other than that it’s not so bad. My current trip is 3-2-3, next trip is 2-3-3-4.

My gripe is usually the longest day is the last day, like my next trip which blocks 8.5 on day four.

There are five leg days in the Hawaii flying, but those are mostly very short legs.

Id rather have four legs on the west coast in nice weather than four through DEN and MDW when the snows are blowing, but some folks bid for winter ops with the idea of making more money.
