It would be nice if they put their money where their mouth is. How about reaching out to disadvantaged minority youths, fund them through college and flight training. Both huge $$$ barriers to enter this industry. The measly scholarships they offer are a joke.

Well better start finding more women or "people of color," or back to hiring more wonder bread
Wow. I'm guessing you also believe what politicians say. The above quote is a fantasy statement not based in reality. I suppose they can spray paint 40% of each new class in order to call them people of color.
Also, I don't know where you got that quote, but 5K newhires in the next decade is pretty darned low considering that we'll probably hire more than 2K newhires in 2021/2022. And retirements are just starting to crank up.

Nobody said it was total new hires; this is your aviate program

Maybe I’ll join here for a scholarship

Nobody said it was total newhires? No, you conveniently left out any source attribution or context. Deceit by omission.
Awesome. And the Easter Bunny, Santa, and the Tooth Fairy are also real.

Deceit by omission? Haha. Sure thing there, sport.

Deceit by omission, as you call it, would also be what your company is doing; taking a victory lap for diversity hiring at 50% while hiding it under the Aviate banner, which nobody knows what it is or that it isn’t general hiring. Probably why the announcement has received so much backlash. Woke nation

How would anyone know you were referring to the Aviate program with this post? You didn’t source it till a later post.
I don’t think Andy is defending or bragging about United’s hiring at all either. What are you arguing with him for?

Maybe I'm just an old "salty dog", yet I just don't understand this mentality. Why should they fund anyone? I funded myself......its called student loans (that I FINALLY paid off only 5 years ago). Are loans not available to these so-called "disadvantaged"? Please enlighten me.....I actually truly want to know!

If you’re disadvantaged what are the chances you’ll qualify eh?

Point is United just wants to “say the right thing” and not do anything about it.

If you’re so anti-United, why are you so interested in all the fine print of our Aviate program and various other things we have going on?
The LOA that “screwed the bottom 1/3”? I don’t see how keeping thousands of pilots employed and (with Government aid) FULL paychecks with the exception of ONE month screwed them? ( I learned that I can live off 35 hours of pay and still be comfortable - family of 6) My financial situation is clearly different than others.
Stop the #UnitedHate…I always smile and wave to you guys in BWI while trying not to get jacked walking by your passengers…
