Spirit of NKS

The "we we're all off that day" is a smokescreen. It is true, but it distracts from the obvious truth. The election comes around every three years. It's not like it snuck up on them. The date for a nomination meeting should be planned well in advance and announced far enough out so that all members of the local have to opportunity to bid for that day off. To wait until after final schedules are set before setting a nomination meeting date is at best incompetent. However, with the ability to nominate via US Mail, the late date selection for the scheduled election is not the problem. The problem comes from the unexpected resignation of the 77 Capt Rep; and now we have a legitimate concern - not of anyone's making - that the late scheduled meeting is actually responsible for effectively denying the DFW based 77 members an opportunity to vote in the interim election.
I call on the SPA MEC to do the right thing and find a way to allow the DFW based members of Local 77 a venue to vote in base for the interim Capt Rep vs attempting a virtually impossible commute to and from a meeting in LAS. If the DFW based members are disenfranchised, the division will only get worse and we really don't need any more division leading into negotiations. To the MEC, the ball is in your court. What's more important to you? Winning your political games or negotiating a kick butt contract with the full support of your constituents?

Are you all happy with the DFW pilots being effectively locked out of the meeting?

Proxies are NOT allowed. One must be physically present at the meeting for the "secret ballot" vote. Ridiculous...

True enough. FLL did what they can and hope 77 follows through. The 77 vote restriction is bs, no doubt. Just want people to know:

Electronic should be the way. After all isn't that the way ALPA it's being moving with all the communications, PAC support, emails, websites, 117 phone apps, magazine and other stuff that I don't even know we pay for?

It is a pretty ridiculous "bylaw" to be present to vote at two recently open bases (less than 3 yrs) and assume that everyone lives there or that everyone it's gonna be going thru with time enough to vote.

Why do I start with this statement? Because the ALPA constitution assumes that all volunteers are altruistic. It assumes that one representative is the same as the next. One of the primary directives of the organization is to have us represented. When a rep fails to finish a term, the ALPA Constitution ensures that we receive a replacement rep ASAP. There is nothing sinister in that.
The situation in ALPA 77 is a problem because of the geographic distance between LAS and DFW. DFW is 50% larger but circumstance is effectively locking the DFW pilots out of the election. Our MEC needs to recognize this as a valid issue and provide a way for the DFW based pilots to have a voice in the upcoming interim Capt Rep election. This should be a simple fix; arrange a meeting place, a data link to LAS, and an official to count the votes. It would be the right thing to do.
BTW, the "nothing sinister" isn't meant to imply that Sailor made that claim. It's just a general statement

Last place I worked we voted online or had the option of having a paper ballot mailed to our house. And we were a dirt bag freight operation.
