I think with the right connections, a civilian background can also get hired with 3000TT+. There was at least one in the class before me that I know of. But you have to be very well connected and not need the benefits of the job fair.

I've done really well the last few years with Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSMX) set it and forget it perfect for lazy people like me that don't have the desire, energy, skill to individually pick stocks

Great approach, just make sure you have some exposure in (at a minimum) bonds and international.

Believe it or not, Schwab has an equivalent Total Stock Market fund, for even less of an expense ratio than the VTSMX.

Equity Index Funds: Schwab Brokerage: Index Funds

Check out SWTSX. (.09%) ER.

Max out your 401k, take full advantage of the company match, and really watch your retirement account grow. You can only put $5500 into your Vanguard IRA- you can dump $17.5k annually into your 401k. With the match, on 4th or 5th year pay, you can conceivably double that to $35k a year... You can even keep the same strategy you're using over at Vanguard!

Man! I wish we had a committee to help up maximize our 401k...Schwab can really tell you what to do. Or leave it to 20xx and forget it.

If you can figure out how to operate Fifi's box, you can figure out how to build your portfolio for way way cheaper.

While the difference between a "20XX" fund expense ratio of 1.05% vs an ultra low cost portfolio you can build yourself for about .15% May seem insignificant, over time with large balances the difference really adds up.

Like $50k or more.

I don't know about you, but spending a minimal amount of time reading up on the topic in exchange for $50k or more seems like a good deal...

Pretty sure the vanguard fund he's talking is through the Schwab 401k plan.

Also I'm sure you know that the united, American, and delta narrow body captains are getting about $35k JUST FROM THE COMPANY without a match. That means while we are putting $17.5 into our 401k to get a match they are able to take their $17.5k to fund an IRA, invest in real estate, start a side business, blow on strippers etc.

Let's not even talk about the nearly two months pay they will be getting in profit sharing for this year. Not AA though.

Joey meatballs evil legacy twin is buying an M6 not a girl car like a Z4

Soooooo, you're saying we are not close to where we need to be as far as a "retirement plan," yet??

I agree with you. Glad to hear it when guys not only know we are behind, but actually know just how far behind we are.

The Vanguard I was talking about is a separate account from my 401k. (Though I do own a bunch of VTSMX shares as well via my 401k. This one I dumped a lot of money in a while ago and just continue put a little in each paycheck. Im currently have Scwab set up for a a Target 2045 but will be changing it.

And it's an M4, not a Z4! It's on order and scheduled to be here in January Boom!!!

(But yes, legacy guys are rolling in M6 grand Coupes and 991 GT3s
