I understand everyone is new once, but we are starting to get to the lower end of the spectrum as far as experience is concerned and could be headed for a perfect storm scenario.
Just wait for that red eye jungle turn with a new Capt and low time FO getting OJT when the sh1t hits the fan. You have very few diversion choices and now you are basically single pilot.

If i'm the CA flying that jungle turn, where crap hits the fan, I want an FO who can help process the situation and work through the situation with me, total time is not necessarily a determinant of that

If you think there is a huge difference between a 4,000 hr pilot and a 2,500 hour pilot you are sadly mistaken. Back at my regional gig I flew with captains with 3,4,5 times as many flight hours as me and still didn't have a clue. Experience is important but if all you are going to look at is flight hours then it won't end well.
The hiring that was going on here 3-4 or 5 years ago were the guys from World, Ryan, DHL, ATA. Those guys had a bit more of a rounded education and a vast amount of experience operating in many different environments compared to the average regional guy.
Like I said, everyone is new once. It's not an impossible job and many will do fine and be good crews and become good Capts. My point was that there will be a window of time where their lack of experience could bite us because we also have a lot of new Capts who will have their hands full.
Flying a regional jet from Atlanta to Cincinnati is one thing, flying for Spirit doing South America Lite is another thing. There are a lot less options doing the latter and I have always welcomed being with someone who has done it a few times.

Sorry, the irony just caught me.
