That captain needs a firm talking to. Even if he had no idea about the enormity of the risk he should know it's not normal for a plane to smell like gym socks. THATS THE DEFINITION OF A DISCREPANCY. We are not mechanics. If it's not normal, no matter how minor it seems it needs to be written up. It's our job and the law. And for Christ sake the company contract proposal should be enough if you weren't interested in being a professional before.

Exactly! This is why some captains probably think they're God! Because others expect them to be one. Adding that fourth stripe doesn't through you into the land of all-knowing. What would you expect we say to this Captain during his "firm talking to"? That dirty sock smell does come up every so often.....so one could actually be considered somewhat normal. On one occasion my FA's were a little concerned so I did have the mechanics come out to appease them (since "we're not mechanics"). Their trained noses told them the same thing......it stinks! "ops check good"! It's not like they have an air quality meter or something!
You really lose all credibility when you essentially suggest we must invoke a work stoppage (since we don't have a contract) to become "a professional". Talk about an oxymoron!

Great GIF guys. I can take the joke. I didn't mean to come off as an all knowing asshat but I guess I did.
I don't however think that a dirty sock smell is ever to be considered normal. Unless the cleaner is on and has a bag of dirty socks sitting in the lav there is nothing on that plane that should smell like that. Those fumes are extremely dangerous and can potentially leave you will long lasting health effects. I still think it's unacceptable for a captain to brush off a clear discrepancy and then also tell the fo he's not writing it up because it's "nothing". What if the fo and the FAs didn't know about this issue? They would have flown for 5hrs with it putting themselves and all the passengers at risk because Alpa and the company clearly don't want to educate the group.
I'm also not advocating any kind of work stoppage. I'm simply say that if you are the kind of guy that pockets write ups to a Mx base to keep the spirit machine moving there is simply no reason to do it. You put yourself at risk and spirit certainly isn't rewarding you for your good will.

Have you communicated your concerns to any of the following:
1. Your status rep
2. Your Chief Pilot
3. OSHA
4. FAA
Also, please keep in mind:
it is pretty serious though.
1. Your status rep
2. Your Chief Pilot
3. OSHA
4. FAA
There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!

Yeah, what if Ramrod can't tell the difference between his stinky socks and the smell that is coming from the air packs?

All parties know and choose nothing for education. Safety committee is on it but the company is marginalizing it and my guess is the Alpa lawyers are preventing some type of communication for whatever reason while the events get investigated. The FAA is certainly aware because ICAO is. Again, they choose to not educate thus far.
