If you're ONLY talking about the W2 on a 73, SW's B-fund, although less than ours, isn't too shabby.

True, but in the next 10 years there will be about 2000 retirements at Southwest and about 6000 retirements at United. That's 1/4 of the pilots at Southwest vs 1/2 of the pilots at United. That's a significant difference in seniority and corresponding compensation. Add to that the value of time for growing your retirement; at 7% interest, it doubles every 10 years.

Agreed.

But we ALL KNOW those junior SW guys (2-3yrs) that "kill it" compared to some of our peers as far as a W2 goes.

THAT'S ALL I'M SAYING.

And since you brought up the bold part, it's as others mention.....

.......a guy hired at SW post 9/11 and got the quick upgrade is way ahead of our situation now. Time value of money and all that.

So you can boast of UAL NOW, we weren't ALWAYS THAT WAY.

She was exactly what I needed: no BS, and painfully honest when it was necessary.

You're right, the early 2000 hires at Southwest did indeed benefit from organic growth but the original poster wasn't aking about jumping ship then; rather, he's talking about current times. If there's little or no organic growth (a reasonable assumption), seniority advancement will be solely based on future retirements. It's just numbers, and those numbers indicate significantly faster seniority at United vs SW as of the current year. Seriously, only advancing 25% in the next 10 years is as bad as it was at United during the lost decade (of which I had unfortunate experience to endure).

Many of us did....

And that's all fine and dandy, FOR NOW.

If there was a similar circumstance to 9/11 or recession 2008 and we furlough and SW ONLY stayed stagnant, well..........

What I'm saying shouldn't be some revelation to you. King sh1t now WON'T always be that way...........

Or the earth could be wiped out by a meteor, or a super volcano eruption. There are a ton of unknowns, hindsight is always 20/20, but foresight never is. We have to make rational decisions based on available data and likely probabilities. I'm closer to the end of my career than to the start of my career. However, if I was deciding at this point in time, I'd pick United over Southwest based on forecast seniority growth. I'd also pick United over Southwest because I prefer having variety in my career, domestic and international, narrow body and wide body. Personally, I prefer the culture of United to that of Southwest, but some people may prefer the culture over there.

Or you could have gone to SW just before 9/11 and not been double furloughed, be a CA, have a good stable job with plenty of money/retirement in the bank, seniority, and simply be HAPPY with that choice. it's not all about measuring your penis size right here and right now........

And speaking of "available data", SWA's shows NO FURLOUGHS and NO BANKRUPTCIES.

So, how or when will this argument/discussion end? I'll argue both companies have their pros and cons. This conversation has happened so many times before and it usually ends the same way.
