They left out the transgender crowd. I'm shocked and appalled at the bigotry United has displayed by not identifying this labeled group in the new quota. Quick, someone spout some garbage on Twitter that big corporation HR departments think they have to appease.

This is going to end up in a rabbit hole that starts in Narnia and ends up in Xanadu...

Any female or minority reading this thread would definitely think twice about coming to work in this industry. If this is the attitude of their future "coworkers", why would they want to become an airline pilot and have to sit for several hours in a small space with some of you who definitely don't want them there or assume they are inferior. It's really quite disgusting some of the things that have been said on this thread. Very disappointing, but not at all surprising.
I'm a minority by the way, have been an airline pilot for over 20 years, and can't wait until several of my colleagues with horrible people skills who are unsympathetic and unwilling to accept others reality of living in America retire.

If I were a minority, I would be extraordinarily angry that these majority white companies with their boards comprising of a majority of rich white men feel like they have a savior complex and that I need a handout to get my foot in the door.
How absurd to believe these people are otherwise incapable of making it in this industry.

The US military has taken the lead in social issues in this country for many decades. Gender hasn't been a consideration in military pilot hiring for nearly 50 years (other than height for ejection seats and combat restrictions). With the gates wide open for decades, the military hasn't come anywhere near 10% female on the flight deck. For UA to achieve its goal, it will necessarily require a massive disparity in standards due to a sheer lack of volume and interest - it's just basic math, not a comment on any social issue.
I would also add this thought. Have fun negotiating a contract in 15 years if a third of the seniority list is beholden to UA for their only skill set, their employment, and has a $100,000 debt to the company. That should make for a very steely-eyed pilot group at the negotiating table (sarcasm intended).

And we have a winner!!!
I don't believe for a second that someone in Willis hasn't thought of this or it wasn't even considered as a side benefit from the get-go. It's another tool in their bag to eliminate the union over the long run. As if there aren't already enough tools at United who want to eliminate the union.

The only attitude anyone here is exhibiting is an utter disgust with the possibility (likelihood) of a minority candidate receiving preferential treatment over a more qualified “non-minority” candidate for no other reason than to check a box.

You're right.
I offered to teach both my wife and my sister how to fly back in the day. Neither one of them wanted to fly planes for a living. They didn't like the life style and .wanted to stay at home and be able to raise their kids. If it doesn't appeal to you, then whatever.
There's a lot of males in the auto mechanic industry. is that an industry that needs some "savioring?"

That sort of "hold back" or "set aside" indicates pre-selection, preferential selection and preferential hiring, and is therefore discriminatory in nature. In addition, the pilots of United were not asked or polled in any way if this sort of activity is acceptable. HR runs pilots hiring, and not the pilots. Another example of HR interfering with internal processes in Flight Operations that is frankly none of their business.
If SWA, DAL, AA, and JB do this sorta thing, I might change my opinion. However, I see it as more reverse discrimination and a direct and overt attempt at liberal appeasement for the sake of scoring cheap PR and political points.

Didn't they bend the rules for a certain minority check airman a while back? I think that was her first leg of OE and that B757 300 never got used again. Made beer cans out of it, or is it still in EWR over in corrosion corner?

Can you say...."Chinese Collusion."
Why do we need to donate 10 million dollars for gender programs in Pakistan?
