I detest the fact that we have FSBs, but they have a place in our operation. Especially on a Global Fleet with preflight testing for Covid being necessary to enter the country. If a pilot tests positive and there’s not a FSB, it’ll take a minimum of 2.5 hours to fill that position with a SC. If it’s single augmented or a double augment with little head room, now the flight has to be completely re-crewed. Just something to think about…
The biggest problem with our reserve rules it there are no limits on SCs and FSBs. This has to be changed and also when said SCs and FSBs are built. There can’t be a middle of the day SC built and no one is aware of it. If they do something like that, it needs to cost them!!!

Create FSB lines that have a premium pay or extra days off incentive. Then put a limit scheduling's ability to assign a normal reserve to FSB unless the FSB has been used that day, and give the converted reserve an extra 3hrs of pay per each day of FSB that they don't fly when they are filling in for the guy who got awarded FSB initially.

United has more widebodies than American and Delta combined. Therefore this situation comes up way more here way more than at American and Delta, which is why we have FSB. Personally I’d rather have way more widebody international flying with FSB than having much less widebody international flying at American and Delta but without FSB.
I agree it should pay something, but I completely disagree that it should go away.

Exactly. I live close enough to the airport that for the right amount of add pay, I’d be picking them up regularly. Commuters wouldn’t be hassled & the company maintains utilization. We avoid delays & cancellations which is good for everyone. Win, win, win.
Problem is not that it exists, but the incentive structure is all off. First 2 for free, plus you’re limited to how many you can pick up aggressively. Then if you end up flying you lose the add pay. Nobody is volunteering for that.

Exactly. I don’t think everyone realizes how expensive getting rid of FSB would be to negotiate. It’s not just that each time a flight is now delayed 2+ hours waiting for a reserve, but now United has to often pay 3-4 additional pilots for the entire trip in scenarios like this. What would we be willing to give up to get that?
