This. Kirby had a narrow window to keep enthusiasm high in our post-COVID restructuring & he’s floundering. If he really wants to fight over contract points he’s already admitted are industry standard, fine- we’ll fight. But he’s made as many big promises to the BOD as he has to us, & we’re not the ones who have to defend ourselves when customer satisfaction scores start moving in the wrong direction & United Next is stuck in a ground hold. I’m actually pretty surprised that his brightest idea is to ask us nicely to be GAS pilots at DGAS prices, but guys smarter than him have tried it, & I guess he’ll learn the same way they did…

We MUST act and message as a unified group. We must do this ASAP. Show up at every event that's planned by the SPSC. Wear the lanyard. Display the bag tag. And FFS please stop giving UAL management a willing audience!!!

But yes, we shouldn’t be advocating for anything intentional other than that which is legal & organized by the union.

Although I don’t know how you’d ever accurately measure it, there is a cost associated with pilot apathy. It obviously can’t come from some attempt at an illegal work action, but pilots that don’t care anymore cost the operation money. Many of us have reached that point. CCO extensions, open time, being concerned with on time performance and efficiency, or going the extra mile just isn’t our problem.

To be clear I am not, nor would I advocate intentional action. I’m only talking about basic human nature & the loss of enthusiasm that occurs when individuals don’t feel respected or taken care of. You can’t stop watering your lawn & then accuse it of retaliation when it turns brown- it’s just a natural outcome. Make it obvious that you think your employees are less valuable than their peers & the result is similarly predictable.
But yes, we shouldn’t be advocating for anything intentional other than that which is legal & organized by the union.

Sure. And I totally get the airline who “wants to be number 1”, meanwhile they’re flying old jets, pulling out of competitive markets, etc.- seen it a million times. What puzzles me here is these guys are walking the walk in ways we don’t often see in this industry. Very aggressive on growth, fleet expansion, branding, etc.; so why get so “penny wise” in this one area?
Your analysis if I understand you correctly is that they’re just full of it & don’t think the whole “brand ambassador” thing makes a significant difference. My best guess is that they do actually believe it, but they are exposing a troubling naivete regarding what it actually takes to make that happen. Either way, we’ve both seen the “please be industry leading employees at industry average rates” show before & know how it ends.

UAL management has already started to adjust their NPS targets down, projecting a loss of enthusiasm from pilots to do all the non contractual niceties (Standup PAs, comedy routines, flight deck tours, glad handing first class, 15 happy go lucky PAs per flight, customized thank you cards, birthday cards, business cards with love notes on them etc.) that they rely on to gain NPS points. United values NPSat $30- $40million in future revenue per point…
The real question is will the BOD continue to support him if NPS/revenue tanks this summer…rolling right into a very dismal looking 3rd and 4th qtr? I know BH is ready and willing to take the reins.
