52 FO’s took the upgrade this vacancy. Of which. 10 are “supplemental”.. ie, PI’s?
net of 42 new Capts.

We were told that we were taking delivery of (roughly) one new aircraft every 3 days..

There is no way we are keeping up with new Captains to fill these new left seats.
The only way to operate this new aircraft, absent of a new UPA (which needs to fix NUMEROUS things..) is for the company to work both line holders and reserves to the max of both FAR limits and contractual limits.

Congrats on the new Captains…
Hope they understand that-
Barring a new UPA in the next few months, their lives will be hell- on reserve under these current rules. ESPECIALLY if you commute.
IF we have an ILC23 in the next few months.. they will be on reserve for at least the next 2 or 3 years while mid level FO’s bid in, keeping them at the bottom.
Gamble either way, hope the wager was worth the reward.

Motch
Thanks Dad. What would I ever do without your opinion of how I should run my life? You know I'm not 13 years old don't you?

Junior captains are looking at upto 10 years of life on reserve before being able to hold lines in some bases. That’s hard pass for a lot of those who could bid for CA under United’s reserve rules. There needs to be a massive overhaul of reserve rules to support United Next. If there isn’t, planes will start getting sent to the bone yard as the airline stagnates in size.
I completely agree the reserve rules need big improvements, I’m just trying to understand how big a leverage point it is. More NBs coming, and can’t fill SFO or EWR Captains, then they open BOS, SEA and/or PHX pilot base. Are pilots not going to bid those? New 787s on the way, are pilots not going to bid 787 Captain to continue to impose the leverage?

I'm surprised the lack of NB CA isn't more of a problem. EWR 777 FOs have an LCC of 77 so they can fly a 6-day W, a 4-day, and 20 days off. Upgrade to 737 for an LCC of 90 and 13 days off? Nope.

This is the big problem. WB is way too easy of a life. Its the #1 reason pilots from other majors are saying they left their carriers to come to United. Widebody flying. We are attracting QOL people who want easy lives, and even someone that can leave another airline and be a Captain in almost any base in a year isn’t causing them to leave as much as being a WB FO as a new hire.

How easy is it though?

It seems to me that the reality is, more and more young people are not willing to give up their life outside work for the almighty dollar. If you get hired in your 30s, you probably have a family and the quality of life you can have as a senior FO making 200,000 a year is a better trade than an extra 50 grand a year and six more days of work a month. If you’re young and actually enjoy the person you’re in a relationship with and/or have things you like to do outside of work, the extra money is not going to make up for the time lost away from your pursuits.

As hummingbear says, everyone has a number… But at this point, I don’t think the trade is worth it for most (as evidenced by the company asking people to upgrade)
+1

Former NB CA who took the downgrade for WB FO here. Quality of life is great. My return on investment for the small pay cut I took is astronomical. Fewer legs, home more. Much better overnights that don’t involve Des Moines. Every flight is one leg to the gym and happy hour.

If we were Southwest we wouldn’t be having this discussion. United has too many sweet gigs pilots can do that don’t involve 32 legs a month in a 70 year old cockpit.

I’ve done it too, it becomes a little mediocre and very very boring, it’s not the best as you make it sound! To each its own!

The hourly pay difference between WB FO and NB CA needs to be $80+ if they want to fill these vacancies.

Sounds pretty nice. I’d be a relatively junior line holder FO on WB right now. Curious how many days guys in EWR and on reserve are actually flying per month?
