They do have 8 747-8's coming through 2018 not manned for. Supposedly. I'm not conviced the hiring presently going on is not for the first 3 coming in a few months.
And with the 50-60 mandatory retirements next year, I see 200. Far from the 371 number.
Unless UPS plans on opening new gateways, I don't see the need. What's the manning per 747? 12? Left Seat.

Also, per Contract 2016 IPA pilots will start flying CGN-IST-TLV no later than 17-06 and SNN-DUB-CGN no later than 18-06.
Above-plan volume is also driving additional block hours from existing airframes, which of course requires staffing unless you like getting a half-dozen JA calls every day off.

They added the 747 vacancies in 16-103. Some say that was not for the 3 -8's arriving soon. But I think it was. Obviously. Since the 3 are arriving soon and there has not been a new vacancy. It seems to me the earlier 40/17 to the 747 were for the 3 coming this fall. So 371 next year is very optimistic.
I also understand we have a few more hours to cover with the new flying with DUB-SNN, etc. But far short of 371 new hires needed. Unless UPS is hiding major expansion with new gateways. I'll stick with my 200 prediction. Unless there is an announcement of expansion. New Zealand, Delhi, Vietnam, Athens, etc.

Historically the 747 fleet is staffed at 13 crews per aircraft, approximately 12 Captains and 14 FOs per aircraft. The 05 bid package has 131 CPTs and 188 FOs, 319 total which is 20 pilots short of the 338 required for 13 crews/acft.
With the addition of the extra SF sections, the 747 fleet is understaffed for the current number of aircraft. Most of the crews in bid 16-03 are accounted for in 17-05 pp.
Probably start offsite training this fall, to accommodate the large training requirements for the 8 747-8s. UPS took delivery the 8 747-400s over a 4 year time frame. We are getting eight -8s in less than a year. Bid probably next month.
