Latest rumors regarding 74 is using MIA sim for some of our new-hires' training..
Also, supposedly 5 virtual procedure trainers (touch screen training devises) are being built for us, in Canada I believe?
Two of them will be 747-8 devices, one will replace the current trainer which we leased from Boeing. The other one will be based in sdf.

Not sure what the remaining 3 devices being built are going to be but probably 767s?
So some new hires will train in sdf/mia which should relieve the absolutely swamped anc training center.
Another 747-400 sim in the works and i think they're planning on keeping it in anc but who knows.

Something I never knew was that apparently there are no 747-8 simulators out there?! There's only one ever built and Boeing has it. All airlines use 747-400 sims with -8 virtual procedure trainers taking care of differences training. (can anyone at atlas confirm this? I always thought Atlas had a -8 simulator?)

I got this scoop from our van driver's ex-wife, also referred to as his cousin, so I know it's true!

That last part is true regarding the Atlas sims. We trained (as of a year and some change ago) on 400 sims and had a -8 VPT for differences.

Still true at Atlas today.

Thanks HP and KME, had no idea...

_____
PS. Also, apparently they're still hiring managers into the training center? :-(

I'm guessing there aren't enough ipa volunteers? (don't know this for a fact)
Even with the recent, minor improvements for our IPA instructor-volunteers I bet you a commutable schedule will still be difficult to obtain..

Beginning with pay period 17-08, UPS will invoke Article 1.A.4. of the contract to allow crewmembers to pick up open time on vacation days (VAC). The Company will also invoke Article 13.K.11. for pay period 17-08, to allow crewmembers to be paid open time on top of guarantee. This change in policy was reviewed with the IPA's Executive Board in response to the current training surge. The combination of growth and elevated training events caused by the acquisition of the 747-8, contractual changes, attrition, and other network changes, is stretching our operational limits to cover flights and ensure timely service to our customers.

Earlier this year we reported to you that we planned to hire about 300 new pilots in 2017. We now expect that the number could be as high as 325. Based on current trends, hiring for 2018 looks to be similar. Thank you for your support during these exciting times of growth for our airline.

Call me when you get serious. Not this piecemeal. JA pay for all open time. Like other Airlines have done for decades when in a pinch. And 200% pay when really desperate. (FDX)

Boeing sim is convertible between 747-400 and 747-8, but takes approximately 6 hours to convert. It will be evaluated shortly for use as 747-400 sim later this fall for initial qual training.

Furlough letters to follow when the "pinch" is over! Once people live at the hog trough they tend to stay there!! Believe the number was an incredible 75,000+ hours of open time gets picked up per year at UPS! Don't think anyone needs additional incentive for us to have LESS pilots!!

i would disagree with your assertion. Who but perhaps the 1% picked up open time during our last furlough, when open time as you state has been the staple at UPS? We had similar discussions in the past concerning increasing vacation pay that fell on days off. Some did not want it raised. Some are taking the extra pay offered yet it seems OCV is driving hiring.

Let those who want to work work, and those who enjoy the time off do their best to get it.

Seriously? Just like on the B & G, you guys are out to lunch on this. Paying JA pay on open time is going to affect upgrades? Whatever.

You want to protect and increase upgrades? What happen to the limit on bid packet construction to 75-77 hours? Never happen. This is costing us hundreds of Captain slots. Now we have 87 hour lines. This effects upgrades way more than the company paying JA rates on OT. No one is talking about this forced overtime are they.
