I'd take the first class offered.
Definitely have a car for training. It also makes your life so much better if you commute later on.
If you think you are going to want the SDF domicile bring crashpad essentials now so you don't have to drive them back later or lug them on flights.
Clubs and/or bicycle, etc.. Should be enough good weather remaining to justify bringing them.
If you get the hotel vs the suites option I've heard some guys brought an old toaster, microwave oven, and kitchen basics to be able to eat some of their meals in.
Some kind of password keeper. You'll get access to all the company stuff which is 10+ Sites if I recall, then the ones for union, benefits, and so on. Though some might be better off just leaving their smartphones at home for a year....
I'd join all the airline Freq flyer clubs, major hotel chains, get uber & Lyft accts while you have downtime before class. Just 1 less thing to have to do. The suites allowed us to get points when we went thru initial and I think that's still the case.
The classifieds section of the Bar and Grill can come in handy as is the search function once you're off oe and operating in the system. Outside of the classifieds dont post or participate on it during your probation year. The layover database is a gem for layover info. Get the IPA app early on as well.
Last but most important: keep your eyes wide open and bring a costco sized supply of expectation zero.
That's all I can think of. Congratulations and welcome.

FTFF...
A big +1 to your post.
With the dearth of hiring over the past twenty years, why would you ever pass up the first class that you can attend? It can literally cause you to delay upgrading for a year or more if ups decides to sit on their hands with hiring.
There are so many frigging passwords and logons for the myriad of upsers/airupsers/flt ops websites that it is very difficult to manage. Have some system to keep track of all that computer bs.
Drive to training and bring ur sh*t with you. After you get released to line, you're on your own for crashpad/hotel for staying in the ville. Use the IPA resources to find a pad or good hotel rates to make your life easier.
Read the bar and grill but don't post for the first year. Management pogues have access and it will bite you in the butt if you hang it out while on probation. Ask questions of the capts you fly with...they are more than happy to share how it really is...(and yes, most of the stories are true).
Welcome to ups and expectation zero is real. Just don't take it personal and realize the checks always clear. When you're home, don't even dwell on ups...enjoy your real life away from ups.

I'm no apologist for UPS management. They reap what that sow. However, there have been indefensible issues with new hires. The IPA is aware of it as well and newhire mentors are stressing it.
Some of the issues;
-using cell phone after aircraft secured for flight.
-failure to silence cell phone and receiving a call during takeoff roll...twice on same trip.
-answering IWatch and asking sim instructor to "hold on a minute, I have to take this."
-numerous new hires not showing for a scheduled flight.
-UTC (unable to contact) while on reserve. UPS policy has always equated it to stealing if done on purpose.
-researching CGN bars on iPhone during partner's debrief from sim training.
-at least 4 cases of tardiness to flight departures in ANC.
-failure to wear a complete uniform in airport terminal. (Not talking about a hat either)
It's got the company and IPA scratching their respective heads. $200k the second year should motivate guys to put their phones away, be on time, and buy reliable transportation while in crashpads.

Next we will all be putting our electronic devices in a mailbox prior to a flight (or sim) like an episode of "Better Call Saul". You can't make this $%& up.
In regards to trips, for all of you out there that are new (day one or 7 months) just because you calendar says your flight leaves Tuesday, that doesn't mean its Tuesday where you are. Please use the brain your parents gave you and realize that Tuesday is a "Z" date, that might mean Monday in AK or the west coast. 0030Z could easily be the day before on the west coast or in AK depending on the time of year.
Pay attention, hang up the damn phone, and act like you aren't entitled to anything other than the benefit of the doubt that you aren't one of the ones acting this dumb, otherwise we will all be wearing diapers.
As one of our schedulers famously said "what Z time is it where you are?"
Carry on.....

We are not the only ones battling the "me" generation. AS, DL, and FDX are dealing with similar issues I am told from friends there.

Friend at United said a guy in her new hire class took 2 calls on his cell while in the sim during training. They called him in for a meeting with the training manager and a union rep to discuss, planning on giving him a good ***** slapping and keeping him. While in the meeting, you guessed it, he took a call.
He's back home now.

Either would be out of line IMO, but just wondering how strict the rules are regarding cell phones.

If you get awarded the 747 or ANC MD11 and go there for training, you will get per diem 24/7 while in training. Not sure when it cuts off. But my classmates said they banked some money.
