There was a rocking chair outside the interview rooms, along with some other, more comfortable chairs. When I was asked to leave the room, I was told, "Go sit in the rocking chair." I went and sat in the rocking chair. When they came to get me to come back in, the Captain in the interview was laughing and told the HR lady, "We have to hire him now, he was sitting in the rocking chair."

When you interviewed with Dr. Janus, he had a rocking chair next to his desk, for you to sit in, and he sat across from you in his desk chair and asked his questions, for about 30-45 minutes.

There was no internet in those days, so the only gouge you got was from other Delta pilots who had survived the interview. There was no knowledge test, just 2 Chief Pilots, one on one, the HR guy, the MMPI and Dr. Janus.

If you got by them, next day you took a physical.

The only question was, "To rock, or not to rock?"

Sit at attention, or relax?

Or a little of each?

When I entered his office, I looked at the rocking chair and said, "So THAT's the chair I have been hearing about all these years! To Rock, or not to rock, THAT is the question!"

He laughed and I sat down, we had a good chat and I left. I really don't remember if I rocked or not. Maybe I rocked a little, but mostly I sat up straight and said yes sir, no sir, etc.

One (weird?) question he asked me was, "If money was no object, what would you be doing?"

I was a little confused, so I asked him, "You mean, if I never had to work? I have all the money in the world and I can do what ever I want?"

He said, "Yes, anything you want, money is not an issue."

I thought about it for a few seconds and then said the fist thing that came to mind.

I said, "If money were no object, I guess I'd be living on a 65 foot sailboat in Tahiti, with ten naked native women crewing it for me!"

He had a good laugh and said, "Well I've never heard THAT ONE before!"

Seriously? They really ask this kind of nonsense. I can honestly say I've never had either of those terms come up in 29 years of airline flying. Maybe I need to get out more. Makes the rocking chair seem like a valid indicator.

I was a 2001 hire. The rocking chair was gone but the psych guy sat in a chair that towered over the cushy chair that applicants had to sit in. Literally, you sank several feet lower. I think I recall my knees being higher than my head. Instead of sitting back, I leaned forward. It seems to have worked.

One of our Captains met Dr. Janus at a social function and asked him what the rocking chair was all about. The doc laughed and said: "I don't know how all of that stuff got started. My wife bought the chair because she thought it would look nice in the office."

I was a 2001 hire too, but the shrink had a couch. I sat back in it. When he suggested I might have a death wish because I skydive, I laughed and said he had a definite death wish because he was a hang glider, (there was a picture of him hang gliding on his desk,) and I at least had a reserve parachute if something went wrong. He thought that was funny and laughed. Guess I passed.

I'm convinced the whole psych portion is to find your buttons, push them, and see how you react. Although, from some of the "Captain Happys" we have, I don't think it's 100% accurate.

When I interviewed (May `66)I was told that Janus was a hawk on the war. I was still on active duty down at Mainside PNS, so I went in my uniform and took the tests and then saw the doc. He asked me if I had read the ATL Journal that morning. I told him that I had not. He said "The paper reported that the Marines dropped a bomb on Hanoi and leveled 9 square miles...what do you think about that?" I told him that I was sure that they wouldn`t give the Marines a bomb that would that much damage. He just nodded and thanked me for my service. I don`t remember a rocking chair in his office.

Does anyone have a recommendation on where to place self employment history? I have a side gig that I think will strengthen my app but the Work History spot doesn't seem to fit too well.

Be careful not to confuse the computer. I had overlapping jobs and was advised by a friend that I was making it difficult for the computer to score my application. I removed the overlapping job and got the email the following month for an interview invite. No idea if this was just dumb luck or had a real correlation, but if I had it to do all over I'd definitely not put in multiple jobs that overlap time.
