If I had to take a guess they are trying to hire former compass/XJT guys.

You are the test case to see if my holding out for airlines hire furloughed 121 guys first or CFIs with CTP course done first.

I’m a 1500 hour CFI and I just received this email from them:

“Thank you for your interest in Air Wisconsin Airline’s First Officer position. We have received and reviewed your application. At this time we have a few limitations for our First Officer classes, and will only be able to bring on pilots that have their CTP completion certificate and unexpired ATP written, or already have their ATP license. As the year goes on, we do expect to resume the APT/CTP training portion of our program, but do not have it available at this time.

If you have successful completed your ATP/CTP course and have an unexpired ATP written or already have your ATP license and are receiving this email in error, please email us at [email protected] to let us know.

If you do not meet the ATP/CPT qualifications, we will keep your information on file, and will reach out to you again via email as soon as we are prepared to resume our ATP/CTP training. At that time, we will discuss next steps and interview opportunities.”

Got something similar from Mesa as well.

I could be wrong but I heard CTP courses are currently backed up as well.

That would make sense. I know ZW used to do it in-house but later ended up outsourcing. Not sure if they still have the ability or not.

I don't think that is the case... I have a CJO, but no ATP/CTP or written completed. I paid for and signed up for an ATP/CTP course here in Orlando (Kissimee technically), FL. $3000 (most places are around $5000), I'm taking it next week, plenty of room in the class (and I live here in Orlando, so I don't have to travel and get a hotel room).

I know others that wanted to do what you’re doing but that would require them to quit their jobs and ZW won’t talk to them or give any timeline without the certificate/written in hand

Paying for your own ATP CTP just sounds like another round of pay for training / pay for a type rating. Same controversy, new name. These conversations used to get really heated back in the day.

I don’t see it that way, but I can see how one would want to see it that way.

When management announced to the company that ZW was going to start hiring pilots again the very next line was that we will have to “contain costs.”

Obviously the ATP/CTP course is a cost to the company, so its obvious why they will not provide that training at this time. That said, even if you have the course and ATP written completed, but you do not have turbine or 121 time, I suspect that they likely will not offer you a class date at this time either. I hope I’m wrong by the way, but the fact is there are tons of guys on the streets who have turbine and 121 time and have proven to be successful through a 121 initial training program. The collective cost to train these guys is significantly less than the collective costs to train the 1,000-1,500 hr CFIs who have never completed a 121 program. The guys with 121 experience have a significant less risk of requiring extra training or more importantly failing out. When a new hire fails out because he’s having trouble in the sim, the company has spent a significant amount with no return on investment. So one way to contain costs is for the company to hire former 121 folks as the overall training cost will likely be less. Realistically ZW will likely be hiring former 121 folks first, and once that pool of applicants dwindle, they will offer ATP/CTP and class dates to 121 newbies. How long that will take is anyone’s guess.
