Think about it. They are investing in you to stay for a while. No one is giving out free money. Especially AWA.

The bonus wording is deceptive... It's really a retention plan to get you to 2 years. Which, is good business, just call it what it really is.
Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. I can't blame them for requiring a commitment, but wish they'd be upfront about the stipulations. If someone isn't planning on staying long I'd say take the money and put it in an interest bearing account. If things don't work out and you're still around, then you keep the cash and interest. If you roll early, then after you pay it back you have enough left over to buy a Big Mac meal.

Forgetting taxes. The bonus will be taxed at 35%. What is the bonus payment after OE? 28,000?

After the government gets its cut youll see 18,200 but will still owe 28,000. Be careful if you decide to leave early.

The bonus is *taxed* at the same rate as your pay, it's just *withheld* at a higher rate. You'll get some of the money back on your return.

You don't get the majority of the money until you complete IOE. The termination rate after passing IOE is less than 1%.

I have enjoyed many years of employment here and I highly recommend this company.

With the large sign on bonuses, larger class sizes, upgrades, movement, IAD and ORD officially opening; you couldn't pick a better time to join.

Interesting. So, if you have to pay back the bonus is it deducted from your income on your taxes? Or are you still taxed on that same amount of income? What a headache trying to figure this stuff all out. I think this helps me to decide that bonuses should have no bearing on which airline I decide to get current with.

I'm going to feel bad for the person who chooses not to take the money because they are scared of getting fired and then after 2 years realizes they are still around and never took the money.

How many people do you know have been fired after IOE?

If you take the money and are worried, invest it. You'll have it if you need it.

Everything they've been saying has been coming true. I like the outlook and those hired now will too.

Like I said, I'm happy here. Think what you want.

I'd feel worse for the person who takes the devil's money and misses an opportunity to move up due to the contract of indenture. (contracts that have been found to be voidable in federal court).

You have to make it to IOE to be fired after IOE

I am happy here, but I have a firm grasp on the reality as opposed to the hyperbole. and the reality here is very good at the operational level.

What I despise is mendacity. If it ain't money-free-for-nothing, then it ain't a bonus so don't call it one. And don't include potential wages from a forecasted 18 month upgrade in your total compensation projections.

Why is honesty so hard?

First time I've actually understood the bonus tax (my wife got a signing bonus for her new job and I thought they held out a lot). Thanks for the simple explanation.
