Alaska Air Hiring

I don't smoke cigarettes nor do I like them. The point of my post is that it is slippery slope for a company to ban the use of a legal substance based on the latest trends in morality. What if the company made us take a cholesterol tests or decided that we should not ever drink alcohol or caffeine? How about riding motorcycles or skiing? If someone wants to smoke a cigar or god forbid smoke a cigarette its legal that should be the end of the story.

Nothing slippery about it at all. Mary Jane is legal in several states. Should you be able to toke and fly? Athletes and entertainers commonly have contractual clauses restricting activities like motorcycles and sky diving, and even skiing.
An employer is not really infringing on your (non-existent) right to do hazardous activities, since you don't have to work for them.
If they get too ridiculous (ex banning coffee), then their pool of applicants is going to get small.
Cholesterol is a medical issue, not a voluntary activity, so that's a different animal and rightly falls under existing protections.

Wow, a lot of defensive on the smoking issue. I don't think most individuals care how other pilots live their own personal life, when it does matter is when a guy goes outside right before a flight and lights one up for a last quickie, and then comes hurrying back to the flight deck for the flight. The smell comes too and that's pretty uncalled for.

That's why I forbid all my copilots to indulge in protein shakes or mexican food on layovers.

The two are not the same. Fart is a minor inconvenience and everyone does it. Smoking is a selective life behavior which not everyone does. And the lingering smell/second hand smoke is also known to cause adverse negative health affects.

For real news.... I have observed the following about several successful pilot candidates that I have mentored in the last 2 years. It can take 6-18 months from when you apply to get an interview. This is for 10,000+ hrs regional captains, 4yr degree, internal recommendations, active lobbying with BCPs, meet and greets and job fairs. 2-3 months from job offer to class date. The interview is user friendly and relaxed. They give you a CJO the day of the interview if you pass. Last I heard AS/VX combined will hire 400 this year. New F/Os getting off reserve in less than a year. Then will fly lots of weekends, holidays and red eyes for several years. Junior system capt is in SEA less than 5 years. ( they will likely be on reserve for several years). Most the F/Os I fly with are very happy and enjoy the job. But like me are disappointed with the management's behavior over the last year. And of course the #5 pay disparity with 1-4. There will be some negative issues over the next year or more with the merger. But the place doesn't suck. I have worked for many places to do. Remember it's just a job.

This place does in fact suck and that is a ridiculous amount of hoops to jump through to get a job at this stepping stone of a dumpster fire.
This thread is drifting into a pit of immature nonsense that is becoming a waste of time to follow.

I go to work, I fly the jet safely, I get along with those around me. I go home. I take my vacations and use my sick leave and medical insurance. Same as 10 years ago. Except no paper Jepps and revisions. It's a job. BTW I wish DL would have bought us because I like to travel international and they go everywhere. I have friends at the 1-4 airlines and they complain too.
Maybe we should keep this thread for hiring like it says and create an I don't like my job/company/Life thread.

We are on the same page, apologies for the quick negative response.
I don't disagree with the hoops reference. I was just relating my observations. Job fairs etc do suck!
