While there is still unstacking on holidays, and you can't always protect someone who just doesn't know how to bid, in the end it's not too bad. I'm sure the company would like to run it as advantageous as possible to them and call it good.
That said, the actual trips the company builds, well, that can be a whole different story.
You obviously have no idea how ALPA works on our property. In an ideal world, I agree with you, but obviously you have a different version of ALPA than we do. I would NEVER trust our ALPA people to set proper parameters. If you don't believe me, just look up a few posts above this one re the "judas"/ALPA reference and you'll see there are others who feel the same way as I do. Keep contributing to the conversation if you like as I'm interested in learning more about PBS IF it works well and protects seniority at other carriers, but around here at Alaska I'm not so optimistic. I'll do my best to keep an open mind. Forgive me though if I'm a bit jaded.

I finished OE in Oct. For my reserve line in Nov, I was able to do several trade with self days, and got 4 days off over Thanksgiving.

I have a line this month and in Jan, and have been successful with first and second step trades, open time trades, as well as pilot to pilot trades. But, I acknowledge it could be beginner's luck!

So then, why don't you and others who don't trust the "Judases" get involved and change things?

I wish it were that easy. I've been with Alaska over 20 years and there's always been an issue with our ALPA boys. I'm not in a position to do anything myself as just one person, but believe me, I educate my FO's, especially the new ones, that we desperately need some new blood in the ranks of our ALPA volunteers. I'm really not comfortable discussing issues on this forum, nor would it be appropriate, but if we were to ever meet in person and have a beer, boy could I tell you some tales that would shock the socks off you! If ALPA is working well at Delta, then I congratulate you. Consider yourselves fortunate.

Typical response from a union guy when cornered.
I don't hate the union; it's a necessary evil....we get it! Our union happens to be extremely ineffective and quite honestly, I can't differentiate our union boys from the management. Sheep skins are pretty dang cheap, I guess.
Until we invest in powerful lawyers and formally educated negotiators, we will continue to get our a$$es handed to us every single time. No, a few weeks in Virginia in some quickie "negotiation course" is not working, as we can attest to. Yeah yeah yeah, we have lawyers and ALPO negotiators. You don't bring a knife to a gun fight.
Let's look at our union. Who are they? Most of them, if not all of them, are very junior. Why? A happy ending schedule massage, perhaps. Less flying, more money, and weekends off. Sign me up! The end product says it all.

Isn't your union who you elect?
I am far from an apologist, but when the union has to negotiate in an environment of big/losses/bk it doesn't give them much leverage. Add in the RLA and pretty much the inability to ever strike again at a major airline, and you have nearly two decades of controlling the slide of the profession into the oblivion.
Why do the young volunteer at your airline? Maybe it's because they feel like the have the most to lose and without the benefit of seniority, the most to lose in QOL by crappy work rules.

I'd love to vote and have a say but we have "block representation" which basically means the biggest/largest base has the majority vote. In our case, SEA is it. The other 3 bases are helpless-puppets come to mind. Whatever almighty SEA says goes along with a pretty good arm twisting.
I'm sure the junior guys initially go into the job with a clear conscience/goal but none of them have survived the lobotomy performed by ALPO and company manipulators. If you resist, you will be an outcast. The Judas Symdrome is well and alive. So sad to give up one's soul for a few bucks and weekends off. If the mind is sick, the body cannot be cured.

I'll second that post.

Please share the story of how 'Block Representation' came about. I think it happened shortly after I left AS. If I recall, my bases LEC Capt Rep along w/ many other LEC Reps resigned as their vote didn't count for anything. Amazing how this got thrown under the rug and was never talked about in that great free mag we get monthly.

Baja.
