AA said only 5,000 applicants have updated their applications in the last 90 days. Is the pool rapidly shrinking?

According to AAPilots pilot hiring/recruitment page - we've hired 233 pilots in Q1-17. 116 street hires, 117 flow throughs.

Public iPhone math tells me that's 77ish a month. Our stated goal was 750, but at this rate we're on target for 932. I'm guessing we can lose a class or two in the Nov/Dec timeframe, but that would still have us about 100 over the 750 goal.

Maybe they figured out we really are behind on hiring.

Just had CQT they said 500 for the year although not sure if that is up to date or not.

I think they are front loading the hiring to get as many people on property for summer schedules. That is why you see such large classes now.

500 more or 500 total? Why would they revise down from 750?

Because revising down is all they ever do.

Most of the official sources I've read or heard from seem to stick to the "750ish" number. I think that's a malleable number dependent on demand and training capacity. And regarding the pool of applicants...yes, I would think it is diminishing. The other majors have hired at least several thousand of those who originally applied when the Pilot Credentials site opened up in 2013. Over the last 4 years, Delta has hired around 700-1200 a year, United has hired between 500-750 a year, Southwest has hired around 300-500 a year, and FedEx/UPS have hired a couple hundred a year. Altogether, that accounts for about 6000-7000 pilots, give or take.

And honestly, having the pool shrink to where airlines have to compete for talent would be a great thing for us. Really the only leverage we have at this point.

That's good info to know. I recall the number of apps in the system being thrown around at OBAP last year was around 14,000. So roughly 30-35% of those have been updated in the last 3 months. I update mine monthly and most of the people I know actively trying to land a job do also. The chances that someone actively trying to get hired not updating their app in 3 months is probably pretty slim. If I'm not updating my flying hours, I'm at least reviewing my app and clicking "save" to make them see I accessed it recently.

The pool is shrinking. I would assume a good percentage of those 14,000 applications are the same people with apps out there with 3 or 4 other companies. AA being behind the hiring boom with hiring compared to the other companies just means these people are getting hired by someone else first. I wonder how many of those 5,000 are competitive apps.

Maybe since 50% of the new hires are flows and already have a guaranteed job here, they don't need to update their app?
And the rest of the OTS hire apps see AAL as a place they'd like to go, but know they have a very slim chance of getting hired?
I really don't know, just a thought?

I'd say that's spot on.

If they are flows and not trying to get hired outside of the flow, then why would they even have gone through the trouble of applying on Pilot Credentials? I'd say many of the Envoy/PSA/PDT folks probably haven't.

And everyone I know that's seriously looking to jump to the majors has applied to all of them and updates their apps.

Personally I think the 14,000 pilot pool is getting smaller every year, and significantly so. With current hiring, the others (DAL, SWA, UAL, FDX, UPS) are draining that pool by about 2000-2500 pilots each year.
