Seems like the happy medium is to wear the tie, and as you go into the simulator ask "Do you mind if I make myself comfortable?", before you remove it.

What about the beard?
Hope its not something that's frowned upon

For the line holders out there, how old was the youngest captain you ever flew with?
...and if I dare to ask, the oldest f/o?
..that's for both 76 and 74 types

It won't kill a person and there is nothing silly about dressing in a suit in tie.

The second question is easy. 64. Many times.

It has not been rare for 20,000+ hour pilots, with deep wells of experience and excellent qualifications, to finish their careers in the right seat. This has been a brutal business over the past 35 years.

Hopefully the non tie wearing generation will have a better ride.

In 2012 I flew with a 36 year old Captain on the 747.

Congrats to all who were hired. Get ready for a long haul with training. I was in the August 10 747 class, 6 out of the 24 haven't even started OE yet, and are headed back to the sim for PCs sometime soon. Also Senority means nothing here, guys in the class behind are finishing OE ahead of the 6 in the August class. I have no idea how they plan on training as many as they are planning this year. It took me 54 days from the end of training till OE and was lucky to get it done in one 14 day period. Anyways just a heads up on how things work here and good luck to all.

I just talked to a buddy in the Aug. 10th class. He is one of those heading for a PC with only 2 flights in the A/C. His OE was never completed before his currency ran out. That's just nuts to go back for a full PC after 6 months and only having flown twice. I hope they give you guys some latitude in your PC. I'd be very upset if they didn't at least let you get some sim time before having your PC.
