I know newhires want to pretend like it's not bad here and are desperately trying to satisfy their confirmation bias, but it really is bad, and has only gotten worse over time. Atlas is a ticking time bomb in so many ways, there's a real danger of it being bankrupted through corrupt mismanagement and/or a massive labor dispute. Do you think 10 year captains are bailing because it's hunky dory?
18 year 747 Captains are leaving... With what management wants in the next contract a 12 year 747 Captain would still be paid less than a UPS/FedEx/Delta FO. There really isn't a good reason for anyone under 55 to stay.

By the sounds of some of your schedules lately I’d say caffeine isn’t the stimulant you guys need. Maybe it’s time for Amphetamine rations at Atlas.

Hey 5Y, I apologize if this has been recently asked. I’m wondering if somebody could give me any insight on junior base and maybe schedules specifically out of ANC (which I understand to be the junior base?). Last time I rode with you guys the FO showed me his schedule and it was better than mine at a regional. I’ve heard horror stories about 18+ days gone, but now I’m hearing bits and pieces about guys being able to break that up nicely. Any truth? Thanks!

Gatewaying to ANC and expect to be gone 18-19 days a month minimum counting the gateway travel days. There are lines that split that time up between 1, 2 or even 3 trips a month. Going for the split lines and you may not be gone 18 days straight but you'll be gone more total for the month because you add in extra gateway commuting days. Junior there's no telling what you'll get, and 18 days straight isn't even worst case. People fail at bidding 101 and end up with two 17 day trips back to back or without enough days between to make a gateway back and forth possible or worth while and now you won't step foot at home for 35-36+ days. The bidding 101 is if you don't want it don't bid it, get junior assigned a line that does that to you and they have to adjust the line to give you 7 days off in between the two trips.

Buyer beware....the contract says you cannot be awarded MORE than 17 CONSECUTIVE days without a 7 day break. Their solution is to give you 17 duty days....one day off.....and then another 17 duty days. Their argument is that they have not assigned MORE than 17 consecutive days and thus you are NOT entitled to 7 days between assignments. Ask me how I know....they did this to me. That's how they roll and that is what this company thinks of it pilots.

PLEASE SOMEONE HIRE ME OUT OF THIS PURGATORY.

If you're Gatewaying into ANC with 3 trips a month expect to be gone something like 21 days a month. It takes most people multiple connections to get To/From ANC and now you must be there with a minimum of 10 hours preduty rest. Those lines will probably go Junior too.

^^^truth. For those who are on the fence about coming here, be forewarned that even if you have a doctorate degree in AIMS bidding, the above scenario is one you'd better get used to being junior in base. Calling in sick every month in order to "fix" your schedule isn't going to go over too well during a probationary year either.

Just one more reason to not come here...

Even if you live in ANC, the company will try to avoid returning you to base during your pattern at all costs because they'd be forced to put you into heavy rest per the antiquated 121 rest rules we are stuck with.

You will routinely be awarded blocks of 17 days on with no ability to swap or trade with open time or other pilots. Worse still, on reserve the company can (and will) extend you up to 3 additional days on per month for any reason whatsoever.

So even if you live in base, you WILL get blocks of 17 days on during which you will not see your home or your base, and you should absolutely plan for 20.

Not to mention all the administrative dog**** we have to do for this place.

While United pilots are being compensated to simply update their company iPads, we're still spending UNPAID hours every month compiling company credit card reports so that we're not held PERSONALLY liable for the thousands of dollars this company burns through every month per crewmember on hotels and commercial airline tickets.

Oh and you pretty much have to be a professional crew scheduler as well, because they just throw it out and hope that it sticks with no regard to the CBA whatsoever.

Just letting you all in on the lovely things you'll get to think about when you get to the hotel after your 20 hour duty days during which you've crossed 7 time zones. But hey... It's legal, so it must be safe, right?
