Omni Air

Here a quick update for those who were not able to follow today’s investor call following the Q3 financial results.
ATSG, Omni’s parent company, is doing really well. The reason is that the cargo operation (ABX, ATI) is generating massive revenue and profit growth. This will continue in the next years, as the cargo fleets will expand further with more 767s to come. Long term contracts (including with Amazon) are already signed and rates are up.
Omni, on the other hand, is suffering from the pandemic. Commercial flying in the third quarter was down by 80% (compared to last year, based on block hours), and the fourth quarter looks even worse. The fourth quarter is traditionally weak for Omni anyway, but now it looks like there could actually be zero additional revenue from commercial operation until the end of this year.
There is some hope that maybe Omni’s situation improves sometime next year, but it's uncertain.
There was no mentioning of layoffs or furloughs, but it seems obviously that Omni is currently overstaffed on the crew side.
Although it was not mentioned explicitly, it is safe to assume that there will not be any new pilot training for quite some time. Just my two cents…

Cost are definitely up with all the prepositioning in MX bases, but if it weren’t working they’d do something different.

Investor Call
To “Cujo665”, “HeavyDriver” and “CardboardCutout”:
Great inputs, thank you. It somehow seems to contradict what was said during the investor call.
Here is the exact transcript for those who are interested:
https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-t...-q3-2020-earn/
Maybe the contradiction doesn’t really exist and is a matter of classification of the flights declared as “commercial”. Maybe the 80% loss of “commercial” flight time was compensated by other flying, like for the government etc.
Anyway, I don’t want to dwell on it. ATSG seems in such a good shape that even if there is a reduction in revenue at Omni, this can easily be “subsidized” by income from its cargo operation (ABX, ATI).
Cheers to that : )
One thought that went through my mind: If Omni and ABX operate the same aircrafts (B767), why is ABX not training pilots from the “Omni pool”, but does their separate hiring?
Great inputs, thank you. It somehow seems to contradict what was said during the investor call.

ABX hiring is “special” and “special process”.

A nice touch you don’t see at many airlines....
I think our management here is top notch.
All OAI Pilots and Flight Attendants,
Omni would like to purchase Thanksgiving meals for our crews out flying on Thursday November 26th 2020 and Christmas meals for crews out on December 25th 2020. If your crew is flying through meal time on the holiday it is acceptable to use your judgment to purchase a meal before flying or the next day. This year we ask that you not gather in large groups so each crewmember may pay on their individual OAI credit card. Use reasonable judgment on expense for beverage, appetizer, entrée and dessert - around $50 per person max. No alcohol on the company tab please.
Pilots should send their receipts to xxxxxxx. and flight attendants to xxxxx
Wishing the best to you and your families for a safe and healthy Thanksgiving,
Jeff Tony
Jeff Staton – Director of Inflight Tony Williams – Chief Pilot

I remember when there wasn’t a limit on how much one could spend on the holiday dinner, and alcohol was included. Of course there was that “one” pilot who screwed that up. Ok maybe all of us screwed it up, but the stories!
