Japanese Raise Retirement Age To 67
#71
Yes, and I provided my plan for scrutiny. Have at it. I am planning to have the ability to walk away at 58. Whether I do or not I can’t say, a lot will depend on mood and life outside work. I chose a lucrative career for a reason, to be able to build wealth which provides choices... and I love to fly.
Someone made a claim that it couldn’t be done.

Hopefully not.
I get people lust after a free ride at the top of a seniority list based off a previously lower retirement age they now enjoy. But there is simply no feasable way to properly measure all of the cognitive and associated issues by any AME or little video game test etc. Age mins and maxes are here to stay and there is nothing unfair about them especially in a field like this.
65 is enough for safety and it is a safety issue that's highly correlated with reality in general. The Bob Hoover arguement isn't valid and neither is the Dogie Howser one. Statistical outliers do not nullify strong and obvious safety regulations. I'm sure there's some hot shot out there that could safely fly (as best as we can measure I guess) after being up 36 hours straight. Hey let's raise all regs to accomodate the absolute maximim statistical outliers theoretically possible. Right.
If they ever do raise it again, bottom of the list at age 65 would be generously fair.

Age 55 retirement was my plan.... in the 80’s. Then reality set in with more kids, (how does that happen!???), 05 pension freeze, ‘08 market crash, and the realization that I still like going to work (so does my wife-she married me for life, not lunch).
I turn 65 next year and if had to quit today, I wouldn’t be destitute. I just like doing the job, and from most every F/O I get feedback from-they like having me around, especially when it gets ugly like when I made the decision to divert early when many others later where “MIN FUEL!!!”. They said “how’d you know?” I’m no Steve Canyon, just an experienced aviator and pretty avg guy. Although I will say from looking at many of my F/O’s, I’m pretty sure I could take most in the 40 meter, ropes course or, math rodeo. I was an athlete in school.
Somebody mentioned special carveouts for a few older pilots whose cognitive abilities have declined some. How about the carveouts for the AAA pilots who couldn’t make it through a PC, or a LOE but have been passed along any way due to gender or some other physiological considerations? There are a few who cause me not to sleep in the bunk.
Let’s be honest and put this in the context most under 60 think of first, just like I am now. Whose ox gets gored.
There were plenty chicken Littles last time the age question came up, who were proven wrong. The premise hasn’t changed.
For those who like to worry about what might happen, the best thing you can do for yourself is, take better care of your body and mind, so you can make it to 67, 68, 70 whatever.. If you just don’t like the job, do us all a favor and leave now.

Anybody know what the retirement age is of doctors?
Orthopedic surgeons?
Neurosurgeons?
ER doc's ?
How many hours can they work without a sleep opportunity
Just curious.....
Now back to discussions that will be determined by... politicians....maybe by unions....maybe by lobbyists....maybe by the EEOC due to age discrimination
disclaimer: not for nor against....just curious

Since I am at the far end, I can speak with some authority. It is amazing at 65 how many things start to go wrong, I got on a bicycle the other day...fell off. Walking 100 yards is a big deal. Stairs are the enemy. Most of you are basing your retirement date on how you feel now. Base it on how your older relatives feel now. That be you. Most of my posts are early morning. I'm up, no one else is. Good luck, getting old sucks.- Lil' ray of sunshine.
