LGA would be my choice in that case. LGA-JFK is far easier than the cost of a crew cab.

New hire candidate here, question for non-commuters.

Is it true that line holders can bid on a specific airport? What fleet and seniority would you need to, for example, live southwest of Newark and bid pairings exclusively (or mostly) from/to that airport?

The caveat is that flying can always change between fleets as Network demands.

Right now, your key to EWR would be 737 NYC. Typically on the FO side they go Junior-ish.

What does everyone think about merging this thread with the “pinned”. NYC transportation thread?

Did you see there is an entire pinned thread about NYC and transportation? Lots of good info there.

Question Questioning Delta NYC

Hey all. I'm retiring from the military with availability Fall '22. Divorced and want to move to Brooklyn in 3-5 years when the kids go off to college. I know that's weird to a lot of people, but I'm pretty solid on wanting to live there. Commuting somewhere from CHS until then. Am I crazy to want to domicile out of NY? Should I reverse commute out of Brooklyn? I've been thinking Delta for a long time, but after reading the forums, have some concerns with the commutes to/from NY, among the 3 airports, and with the schedules. United out of EWR (or even BWI) or AA out of JFK are also on my radar. My eventual target, if I'm fortunate enough to work towards it, is widebody to Europe. Thanks in advance for any advice.

You’re crazy for wanting to live in NY in general, not for wanting that as a base. You will have better seniority in NY than in any other base, so that makes sense. Plus as a local you’ll be able to GS more easily and have a better qol vs commuting. Junior WB FO in NY currently has about 5 years at the company.

I would NOT live in NY and commute somewhere else, that would make zero sense. And destroy all of the reasons to live in NY.

My NY friends say the 73 has the best trips, but your seniority will rise so fast in NY that you’ll be able to hold good trips on any aircraft.

Absolutely not. Brooklyn is super easy to get to JFK or LGA depending where you are. Once upon a time I did a “backwards commute” from NYC for a bit, and got the funniest looks when I’d talk to the crews.

Live off the J line and you have a straight shot to Kennedy via Jamaica Air Train. 7ER is 99% JFK flying (1% charters). 737 mostly JFK, and when you hold a line you can bid avoid EWR or LGA as needed. PM me if you have questions about specific areas.

Junior widebody FO in NYC (I assume you're excluding the 7ER as I am) was in one of the most recent newhire classes. Definitely not 5 years. And before everyone gets all bent out of shape about the 765s bidpack, the junior lineholders in May are holding 6 day LHRs.
