I have learned that the hard way.

You don't even have to do that. If you are over guarantee, you are full and no longer have any obligation to the company.

What’s the “safe” way to sit LC from home? I’m assuming it can be done even if a commuter with tons of flight options?

the safe way is ensure that you can, at any time within your reserve obligation, make it to your base sufficiently rested and in compliance with the PWA and commuter clause.

this is usually a problem for early morning callouts that are right at the 12 hour mark. A 7pm callout is often too late for night flights and there may not be early enough flights in the morning to make show time.

I would be very, very careful doing that while you are on probation. The only type of commute where I would even consider doing that while on probation is a very short one that has a ton of options and is driveable should you somehow find yourself without an option to get there in the air. A prime example of that would be BOS-NYC. Something like SEA-LAX may look tempting due to the volume of flights, but there are likely still some times when you might not be able to make it to base in time for a legit 12 hour call out. Obviously at that distance, driving would not be an option.

BUT if you are 1 minute under Average line value for that month, they can tag you for ALV plus 15. But don’t worry, that will “rarely” happen. IE

alv = 72
you fly 73, your “Full”
if you’re at 71:59, you’re available up to 87.

No. RES guarantee is ALV-2, but never less than 72, never more than 80.

So ALV could be 74, RES guarantee is 72. If you are at 71:59, you are hot for rotation assignment....72:01, you are FULL.

I'm waiting on a class date so I don't have access to any of the official resources.
Is it possible for me to "stack" reserve days so I can limit my commute to twice a month? At my current job I work 8 day trips and the idea of being able to put together 2 blocks of 8 or 9 days each is appealing. If so, is it realistic for a junior reserve to pull that off? I wouldn't care too much about which days they are. I've been away from 121 for about 3 years and at my last airline, I think it was a 6 days.

you can bid for every single reserve day in a row. You’ll have (usually) a couple 40-42 hour rest periods in there. I do it all the time.

At Delta you can put all of your reserve days in a row. So you can have like 16-17 in a row of reserve, then 13-14 days off depending on the month. Scheduling just has to schedule you for 30hrs rest during every 7 of your on call days (can be at an outstation during a trip), so you essentially get a few extra days off per month with this method. You can even string your days together month to month so do like 30 in a row, then 28 off, but I've never seen anyone do this...seems brutal.

Edit: you have to be senior enough to hold the days off that you want to do this. But in a junior category it shouldn't take long (aside from holidays etc.)

Out of curiosity how long are folks spending on reserve before holding a line? In say, ATL or NYC?
