Live in base.

Hard to call because it varies wildly based on base/seat/hiring/etc... Reserve can often go senior depending on the base/category. I've seen junior guys forced into lines because so many senior pilot bid reserve.

The first isn't possible for a lot of people. Nor was it possible for a lot of people who got displaced from places like CVG

It's always possible, it's just a matter of willingness to move. He asked for the "safe" way to sit LC from home and living in base is the safest way to do that. In your scenario, the CVG guys are still easily able to sit LC from their houses around CVG.

Always possible is subjective to your family situation. So no, I disagree with always.

No, not always. The antiquated assumption that the airline pilot is the sole alpha and exclusive decision maker for the entire family just isn't always, well, always.

There are numerous reasons within a family dynamic that a move could be far more of an unworkable and adverse life event than a commute.

You can even string your days together month to month so do like 30 in a row, then 28 off, but I've never seen anyone do this...seems brutal.

Edit: you have to be senior enough to hold the days off that you want to do this. But in a junior category it shouldn't take long (aside from holidays etc.)
Thank you. This is excellent news. I think if I'm in NYC, I'd be tempted to do all the days in a row. Anywhere else, I might shoot for 2 blocks with a week or so in between.

You could very well run into problems with coverage awards. At your juniority, you'll like be "unstacked" on on all Saturdays and some Sundays. This prevents you from building a single block of reserve.

Right, that goes back to the "willingness to move" part of my post. Just because it's an option you're not willing to take (for lots of good reasons), doesn't mean it's not an option. I say that as someone who will not move if they ever shut down my base and as someone who left another legacy carrier to not have to commute.

Should be possible before too long to at least get it made into 2 blocks of reserve at least with the projected hiring.
