+1. To add just a little to this good advice, just for general planning purposes. My personal experience as a reserve-by-choice bidder is that the vast majority of the times I got used on SC, I knew about the assignment well before the '3 hour' drive you buddy has. Not all SC callouts are minimum-time. In my experience, most aren't. YMMV.

That’s generally true for me as well, but over the past year I’ve had about 3 callouts that were right at 2 hours or even less, so you’ll always want to make sure you’re reasonably in position.

Anecdotal, but every time I've been called right at SC start for an immediate report, the trip was on my line for an hour or so before the call. That said, in nearly a decade of mostly purposely bidding reserve, I can probably count on one hand, how many times I've been called for an immediate report. Maybe I've been lucky, most of my immediate report trips were for GS. Based on the post above, that tide may be changing though.

Also purely anecdotal, but I have never once been used on SC. I've been used and abused on long call but somehow the only times I've ever enjoyed not being call to fly on a reserve day, were the times I got assigned SC. So moral of the story: expect nothing and prepare for everything!

You must be in a fairly well staffed category

I too have never been used on short call. I think the size of the category matters more than the staffing level. Short call is there for the short notice stuff and that just does t happen that often in the small categories. Atl on the other hand has dozens of pop up trips every day.

While that makes sense it’s still a crap shoot. I’m in what is probably the smallest BES in the system and have had 2 “how quick can you get to the airport?” short calls already this year.

Truth . Ironically I got a text from an FO who was on the same short call window as I was. He sat uncalled while it went out on a greenslip for the FO side. The green slip dude got there before me…..
