This is a example of how wrong the forum gets things. The bid that just closed in nov replaced those ER pilots in fact it replaced almost every single one. Around 94 awards were made. Add in the additional awards now and we may have added seats. The award is still available on delta net. The aug bid replaced many of the 747 captains who retired. The 330 was not back filled because of the lie flat mods.
Sorry - I was talking about the Early Retirement Pilots which have definitely not been replaced. Less Pilots - shrinkage. When DAL Pilots retire and are not replaced with hiring we are shrinking. When you say they are replaced I would say replaced by whom? If they are replaced by other Pilots already flying for DAL, great, then who is replacing them? Follow this logic through and it becomes apparent we have been shrinking. It seems pretty clear and logical to me that if Pilots retire the only way to not be shrinking as a Pilot group is by hiring more Pilots. Reallocating the remaining Pilots is not replacing Pilots. In fact they appear to have added 767 captains beyond those that retired. In NY last summer we had 280 to 290 captains. Going to have 300 plus this summer. The last two bids were net positive. This bid is net positive. I guess you would have preferred that Delta furloughed the surplus FO,s. that would have made for lots of upward movement as they were brought back. Personally I think it was better to keep them on the property. In the Captains seats which were not overstaffed to the extent of the FO' we have now added over 215 new positions since the contract was signed. Crew planning has stated that with this bid they will have used up the surplus FO's and expect the bids going forward to be almost all AE's. I call this good news, you can call it whatever you want. The reality is that most FO's are moving backward either in their category or being displaced from their category each bid for the last 3 years. And this bid is no different. So lets agree to call it what it is. A displacement bid. But because I have never experienced an advanced entitlement my definitions may be wrong. I consider an advanced entitlement bid one where more people move up in their existing category or move to a higher paying category than not. I consider a displacement bid one where more people move down in their existing category or to a lower paying category than not. So I guess we don't really know for certain what this bid will be, but I suspect it is a displacement bid by my definition. It's truly sad when every time a bid comes out my wife says can't they stop doing those you move backwards every single time. It's kinda like being locked in a box at survival. It hurts and is uncomfortable but while your in there nobody is doing something bad to you so you ultimately would prefer the box over anything else. That how a lot of us feel about each bid. It is always worse than it was before. Also, in the quote above you left out the part (5 paragraph, 1st line) where crew resources says they will not hire pilots to fill vacancies. Who cares if they have future vacancies they openly state they do not plan to hire to fill them. You also allude to the fact that they will continue with 757 draw down to fund future crew needs. So, while I do not always agree with your glass is full thoughts. I certainly will not deny that you have amazingly accurate information and insight into what is going on and don't mind sharing which I appreciate. With that said, is seems to me that you are hinting that Delta intends to fund future vacancies from within. So once again if that is the case the company should be honest with the pilot group and call it what it is. |

With regards to shrinking any farther I can tell you from In Command a couple of weeks ago, Ed Bastian stated that Delta is planning on hiring 8,000 pilots in the next 10 years. Obviously some of this is for expected attrition and the rest is for expected growth. Even Wall Street doesn't expect us to continue the capacity constraint we've shown for the last several years. At some point if we don't grow, it will negatively affect our stock price.

We are shrinking to become a more efficient company. With the curent contract the company can do much more than this. Look at the fact that we can operate the same company with 248 less pilots.
