Maybe we need to get back to steep turns in CQ. Whatever happened to steep turns and why did that go away? I didn't mind them. CQ with a V1 cut, then get that back and go to steep turns, then to the shaker or two, followed by ILS and VOR approaches, a single-engine approach to a single engine go around, holding and visual landing.

It wasn't that bad.

We already are doing that. Just did CQ and it included a hand flown visual for the FO.

First look maneuver?

Just curious I've heard some of the first looks lately on the 756 have been 40kt crosswind landings. I'm not on the 756 but are they increasing the crosswind component?

I did recurrent in April, the first of this cycle's new syllabus, it included hand flown visuals for both pilots, but it was just a simple box pattern for each, turn left, turn left, turn left, gear down, land.

What I'll ask for next time is to fly the SFO Quiet Bridge to 28R, side step to 28L at 3 miles, with no ILS, starting at about 5000', 10miles out.

Any of you guys remember that CRM training film we called "Hey Bill" ?

"Hey Bill load that 28L in the box, wudja? And give me VNAV. And Hey Bill...how about a Runway Change Checklist? And Bill...how about gear down? Hey Bill? Can you clean me up to the runway? Flaps 30 please Bill, and update my speed, set the missed approach altitude, landing check, and...Hey Bill...did you call Tower yet?" :D

Now, throw in a new guy flying VFR into SFO for the first time, and the Asian Culture...

I read it was his first time into SFO in the 777. The article said he had flown in there on different equipment previously.

Runway change distraction, heads down, nobody watching the speedometer. Eastern?

That sounds like cq. Did it change?

If you really want a challenge, do the single engine barrel roll on final to the carrier (non arrested) landing...sim time permitting.

There was a PAPI on 28L according to one of the reports I read. I say was because 214 wiped it out as it slewed around. Maybe all red means something different in Korea or it went all white to all red in a nano second.
Timbo, I think you are close to the scenario we will eventually read from the NTSB final accident report.

To allow it to get that low, and that slow, both of them must have been heads down in the FMS...until it was too late. Obviously neither one was "flying" the airplane or looking out the window.

On the 75/76 it's not a first look, but I've done the 40 kt crosswind demo last two CQs. That's the new limit. It also includes gust.

What ever happened to just turn the flight directer off, set up a 3 to 1 glide angle, fly the extended centerline, and do some of that pilot stuff? It's not rocket surgery. Amazingly, the same stick and rudder skills I use in a Luscombe also work in a Boeing.
