No, we are debating the veracity of Rocky Boy's original statement that truck drivers have more restrictive limits than pilots do, when in fact they do not.

OK, I'm busted on that one as far as duty time goes according to the books. However, they typically get more than the 34 in a rolling 7 day period off because if you drive a full 14 hour duty day you hit the limit on day 5. You can legally reset with just the 34 hours, but for schedules most places do a min 48 for resets. Plus they have a minimum rest of 10 hours between duty periods. Realistically most drivers are working 4 on with a couple days off unless they team drive. Mine do 5 days working 12 hours on, 12 hours off then take a 2 day break.

I've worked the schedule my guys work and I can tell you that it is nowhere near as fatiguing as flying a 5-day domestic trip. 5 days of waking up and going to bed at different times each day, 4-leg days with no breaks for food, sleeping in a hotel that has crummy AC or a high school group running the halls, you guys know the drill. Our job is much more fatiguing than a truck driving job.

Exactly.

I think Rocky's original point is that our rest rules under 117 and the LOA are totally inadequate.

Alan is attempting to obfuscate that inadequacy by quibbling. For what purpose, I cannot fathom. Alan, zoom out and step out of the weeds. Our rest rules are an embarrassment, and many domestic pilots (anecdotally) including myself have never been more exhausted than we are flying under the "safer" law and LOA.

Why do that have to put Delta's name in the story?! Yeesh.

My real original intent was to highlight the fact that a trucker went to work completely "legal" under his set of DOT rules and ended up killing someone due to self admitted fatigue even though he was legal. I made the statement that they have more restrictive rules than we do, and Alan is all bent out of shape over that. I was wrong, so ALPA is awesome for getting us 117.

Since 117 I feel like I come out of a day spa every morning when I leave the hotel.

PD,

I totally agree that Alan needs to take a few steps back out of the trees so he can see the forest. But I've gotta disagree with you in terms of my personal experience with FAR 117.

From my perspective as an 88 guy, 117 is a huge improvement. The minimum 10 hour rest, requiring an opportunity for 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, fixes the biggest source of fatigue that I used to experience under the old regs.

I understand there are problems in other categories. But, FWIW, from my perspective in the 88 category, I think it's overall a huge improvement.
