So if say, I get rerouted to a 4.5 hour sit somewhere, I get to sit? Need 5 for a hotel toom?

That. The company's favorite move is knowing the flight won't go anywhere for 7 hours, but instead of posting a 7 hour delay you get 14 30 minute delays and no hotel.

Yeah. I call in fatigued when that happens. That's the perfect scenario for getting pay protected.

I was just browsing bid packages and the 717 LAX B packages look crazy high block/credit per day. I saw many trips with like 26 hours on a 4 day and one 5 day with 33 and a half hours. Is that normal? Seems crazy different from most nb categories.

Ouch, December might hurt. That usually isn't the case. On the other hand, higher credit trips might equal more days off?
