I have tried every major carrier trying to find a phone that will work consistently at major airports during peak hours. They all run out of bandwidth for data and slow to a crawl. Phone service is a bit better with ATT being the best for me. The cell towers simply get overloaded, especially during IROPS when you need your phone to work.

Every phone/carrier combo hates JFK. My Galaxy S8/TMobile work great in ATL. As previously noted, it will hold a phone call from A-F on the train. JFK will drop if I walk a few feet away from the window.

It's not your phone. My old iPhone 5 and my fancy new 7 with Verizon have the same issues in Atlanta. Sucks for checking schedule after block-in and getting one last look at the radar before blocking out.

Somewhat related, anybody else have issues trying to use their phone as a hotspot with their surface? Both my old and new laptops have zero issue tethering to my iphone 6, but the surface 3 refuses to connect. My phone is listed in the available networks but it always fails to connect/authenticate. I've verified the correct password. |

It does seem to hold a call pretty well, the data just crawls.
Agree, on the plane the phone is good for texts/calls only. Wonder if it has something to do with essentially being inside a Faraday cage. I hadn't considered density vs. tower availability, good point. Somewhat related, anybody else have issues trying to use their phone as a hotspot with their surface? Do a hard shutdown on the surface by holding power key down until screen goes blank. Then try and connect.

Can I consider my surface shutting off and restarting periodically on it's own a "hard shut down"?

Yeah I have the same problem in ATL. Works fine in the terminals but terrible in the plane. Also almost no data on the bus till I cross 85. I am with verizon.

Change your username to something simple - i.e., no special characters. Just 6 or 7 letters. Old worked fine with any "SSID" on your hotspot, the surface 3 with the update went crazy with anything other than simple... bring on the iPads!

Click on 'Settings', 'Network and Internet', the WIFI icon on left, click on "manage known networks", go through and delete all the networks from hotels, coffee shops, airports etc, and then re-tether your cell phone hot-spot. It's kind of a hassle but cleaning all those out of my surface allowed me to use my phone again. I can't help with ATL, data just doesn't flow there. Hope this helps. |
Anybody hearing a rumor that the next efb will be a 10" iPad Pro 256gb? Trying to see if there's any merit...
