During a SLC base visit with SD the network guys were asked this... I'm paraphrasing but heres the gist of it: MD90 vs 738 -738 flies 25 days of the month before breaking even, the last 5 days are gravy, the used MD90 are almost the other way around. - Was asked about the hourly operating cost difference between the MD90 andwith 160 seats vs 738. The network guy dind't give a specific number but asked to guess at $1500 he still was making the "higher" motion... -In the pilot lounge the Network guy said "obviously the crew costs are lower on the MD90...." There's a reason the BOD last year authorized the purchase of up to 65 used MD90... Cheers George And ACL, thanks for the kick. I would say my inner ear wasn't messed with and that'd help me get out but thats when I remembered my inner ear is ruined thanks to a loud band last night. One that played anything you want if you write it on a $20 bill. Which inspires a thought... "ladies and gentleman, welcome to Atlanta, we're about 15 minutes early but unfortunately our gate is occupied for about another 30 minutes. We appreciate your patience while we wait for our gate, but I just wanted to let you know that the Captain and I do park planes for tips. So if you want to write down on a $20 bill which gate you would like us to park and kindly hand it to one of our flight attendants, and if it actually makes it to us, we will park there, without asking." |

A single payrate system does not necessarily have to handcuff a pilot group with regards to future airframes. It all depends on how it's written. You could still have current and negotiate future individual pay values for specific airframes in such a scenario, and then average out the actual pro rated fleet into the single pay scale.
That way the company can't add 200 A380's for the same price. Any reclaimed scope flying (as likely or unlikely as that may be) could be taken care of via a separate scale. With "the hammer" gone, new fleet types would fall under the same pay negotiation process as they do presently, so nothing would be lost there anyway. That would lead to a potentially fluid payscale, even mid contract, but that again would depend on how it was written (pay re-indexed every year, or pay can't go down for the duration of the CBA, or whatever could be negotiated). The savings from drastically reduced training alone could be priced in to give additional "bargaining capital" to the pilot group (which they could spend on a raise, a new quadruple purple slip system or scope reclamation, etc). Of course that would practically pop the training bubble and would drastically alter the staffing models during high training cycle periods (i.e. significant retirements and the waterfall effect) and as such the vast majority of the "found money" in such a system would need to be spend on reclaiming scope otherwise there would be massive pressure for furloughs. It's possible to do it and do it in a way that adds pilot dollars to the contract with each and every new/improved plane brought on property. It solves a lot of issues, but causes many others. Perhaps a good initial step would be to go to a CALesque style 3 tier system (with a 4th tier for reclaimed scope if 50.1% of the membership was willing to wheel and deal for it). |
Another Recovery Question
If your trip is taken for training and you get reverted to recovery flying, can they make you show any earlier than your previously scheduled show time? An upcoming trip now has a training note that the Capt is to give OE to another Capt. Scheduling says they aren't working it yet, and will call the day before if it is going to happen. I'll be out of town and don't plan on returning until I absolutely have to to make my show time. Question is...Can they call me the day before and reassign flying that starts earlier than currently scheduled? I'll start to look it up, but I figured I'll get a faster answer and maybe a reference here first. Thanks.
Update: I did find in the PWA that they cannot make you report earlier than originally scheduled (at least that's the way I read it). Anyone confirm I'm reading it right? |

I was thinking the same thing. No way they will fit all that in our terminal. |
