Was/Is it "common" practice to "tell" the FA's to call once an hour to the flightdeck to "check on us" from the former south side? In 15 years, I have never heard that, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been done. The FA wife also has never had a Captain say that, although she did get a little chuckle out of it.

It's in their "redbook" (No not that REDBOOK!!!!!) that they are to check on us in flight (don't know the exact verbiage) As a Southie, I would say premerger they checked on us 90% of my flights. No flamebait but post merger, North F/A's rarely check on us in flight(but if we call them, they are accomodating to our requests)

On the north side, longer flights, I would say 50% would call up, but, again, if you called for something, 99% were very helpful.

Question for anyone.. I am on a block of 8 days reserve. I will have flown the first 6 days in a row with out a 24 hour break. Does this mean I am "off" on the 7th? Can they even use me for short call? Thanks in advance for any answers.

They can't use you for short call. You can't fly again until you have 24 hours off.

Since DLpilot answered your question about sc, let me give you another thing to be mindful of in this situation and that is they can most definitely give you a 2-day starting on day 6 as long as day 7 is only a deadhead. In that situation they don't have to give you 24 hours off either.

Example, say you have 7 straight days of reserve. At the end of day 5 you've flown or had SC for 5 straight days. You think, I can either fly on the 6th day or 7th but not both. However, they can give you a 2 day on day 6 that is DTW-IND for the overnight and deadhead you the first thing the next morning on day 7. That's 7 straight days of work in our minds, but as long as you don't fly then it's permissible. However, you need 24 hours off before you fly an airplane again. So, pulling this one out of my butt, if you on day 7 arrived in DTW at 7am they could give you a day trip on day 8 that starts after 7am. Your schedule would show you 8 straight days but you had 24 hours off. I believe that is permissible but not 100% sure.

From When Scheduling Calls:
The requirement to be relieved of all duty for 24 hours in any 7
consecutive days applies to all pilots except international 4-man crew.

The 7 consecutive days are considered to be calendar days, while the 24
hours may be any 24 consecutive hours, i.e., not necessarily a calendar
day, and may occur on a layover.

Note that this is a flght limitation. A pilot may fly for 6 days and train
or deadhead on the 7th day. A reserve pilot may be on call for any
number of consecutive days, but must have been released from telephone
responsibilities for 24 hours at some point in the past 7 days prior to
reporting for domestic flight duty.

On day six they can also fly you to a 24 hour layover to reset your clock. I don't normally see that because after working 6 days I'm usually close to 30 in 7 as well.

Wow... How did he make that happen? I'm guessing he won't be retiring early.
