I love DGS guys at Delta. Training is absolutely awesome experience.
The egos are in check, they have seen it all, happy to be there and they do a good job especially if they can work only 10 sessions a month.

BUT I do agree with protecting the seniority list jobs idea.
Active pilots should teach, but maybe ... part time? Stay away from overworking. The box and golden handcuffs could do bad things to you.

When the going gets tough, and times get rough, people become more competitive and have a greater incentive to put out their "A-game" to distinguish themselves. Don't believe it? Look at old pictures of people who were out of work during the Great Depression. What were they dressed in? By and large, we find them dressed to the nines, even to stand in a bread line. It has everything to do with respect for others and yourself. And it shouldn't have anything to do with matters of pay, pension losses, and declining quality of life. After all, who are you getting back at by leaving off the hat? It ultimately comes back to you.

Now I truly hope that you take the points I make at face value, and that they are not specifically targeted towards anybody. You have everything to gain by maintaining the appearance of the consummate professional pilot, no matter what. It is good. And good goes around :D
