I define it the same way Bar does. In fact Lee defines unity correctly too. It is about the profession as a whole. Isolationism may work for short term gains, but long term, it will hurt your pilot group, and the profession as a whole.
You talk about fighting one enemy versus two, but the simple fact is that all of the issues we have with small jet operators are dealt with internally within ALPA. There is a tangible benefit to that. Going independent will actually, over time, cause you fight multiple on multiple fronts, with a opposition that may not agree with each other but their goal is the same; your flying. Dealing with all of these issues within a National organization is the way to go. I prefer to do that versus fight these groups at the table with our company or in a court of law.
Reading the transcripts of all of the Executive Boards from the 1930's on, gives me the appreciation of these issues, and how they have plagued the profession since the inception. At all times the Board was cognizant that their actions could harm the profession as a whole. Making decisions that benefit the group were always the goal. This is ever present in all of these board meetings.
