Where does 109.8 % come from ? Was it the Tim Martin journalist that wrote the story ?

Hey RCD,

My bad....the airline was Airtran, but the parent company listed was, wait for it, wait for it, LUV...somehow that makes it worse. $5.64/ $11.83 =109.8%

Totally incorrect. 230K is AVERAGE for their Captains and 18 days off per month is AVERAGE.

This post is a classic example of how DALPA will attempt to spin us as higher paid than SWA pilots.

Carl

Carl, Go back and read further in their welcome package. They state there that most lines are 17 days off which means 13 or 14 days working. The other number includes vacation. Not much different then the average Delta line although we have a wider variation. Unless of course you don't trust SWAPA's word.

Someone else posted they average 7 hours a day! Yet the SWAPA publication states they average less then 9 hours a day on duty. Lets see, report and release 1:30 and then in less then 7:30 minutes remaining averaging 7 hours flight time. Even with their quick turns not likely.

There is a sample 3 day trip posted on the welcome package. I think it shows 16:50 total time. A friend there says he thinks they run about 17 average on a 3 day so sounds about right, not quite the 21 posted here.

One other point. SWA used to run a linear system. Very easy to build excellent rotations. As they morph into a hub and spoke system I am told they have seen a degradation in rotation quality. Still the fact they operate only one aircraft type gives them the ability to build much better overall trips then a airline operating just about every aircraft ever built.

Two points, first is that's 7 hours a day of CREDIT, not flying time. The 3 day trip that they have as an example shows 4+50 of block, 6+20 of duty (4+50 plus 1+30) yet it pays 6+30 for the first day. Very nice. I don't see many Delta trips that pay more in total that duty time.

Second, they really do turn the airplanes in 20-25 minutes many times. I know it's hard to understand from our hub/spoke system, with long turn times. Because they turn the airplanes quickly, their duty days are not long. Thus, they spend very little time sitting around essentially not getting paid.

So look at each of our fleets as a "linear system" - our 757/767 fleet is a huge operation. Our B757/767/767ERs add up to 256 airplanes. That seems like a pretty big airline in itself. Why am I changing airplanes every freaking leg?

I think you said that it was better to use Delta's average revenue per pilot rather than comparing us to SWA. Why pick that metric?

21 hours for a 3 day is a pretty average credit at SWA! No spin, either. Hard to believe, huh?
