Invest in that asset, and guess what, your business gets you a return that cannot be measured on a balance sheet, a 10K report, or a on-time metric. It may show up here and there, but where it really shows up is customer satisfaction. In simple interaction of people to people is what sets the tone for your business.

Just like in the restaurant industry, Customers will forgive you for a bad meal, but they will not forgive you for bad service. That translates in to everything we do here. All of that starts with putting value in people. The first step in that is, recognizing a need to pay them correctly, respect their families needs, and understand that one may love their job but they work to live, not the other way around.

When I turned down SWA, I told them my reason, which was a few things, but family was at the top, and their response was, "Family comes first, and if you ever decided to work here, just give us a call and we will gladly take you." That right there says many things. It shows that the corporation gives the latitude to the employee to make a great decision, and it shows the cultural mindset that they put forth. That all comes from clearly showing though money and other means that you matter to your company. It really is not any simpler than that.

It amazes me when Steve Dickson comes out and says in a Trim Tab that it is vital we protect our product (and congratulates us for doing so) while at the same time the vast majority of our product is not under Delta's control (our "Connection" partners). This is one of the reasons we are having problems - we have no control why someone is connecting from or to a Connection partner (or JV partner with Delta code). This doublespeak is one of the reasons we have problems. You don't see this problem with them most successful companies in our business (SWA, FedEx, and UPS).

Just my 2 cents.

Well said, ACL. Almost sounds like I could have written it... :D

Again, well said and I completely agree. But you turned down Southwest???

He's not the only one - at the time I did it (late 2000) it was a pretty easy decision - in hindsight maybe not so great. In fact, my class date at SWA was 2 months prior to my DAL class date. You never know. Up until now I haven't regretted it BUT the results of this next contract may make me do so (although I'm not one to dwell on things that can't be changed). I will say that being a CAPT at SWA at 10 years and living in base certainly looks appealing now (didn't know that's the way it would be - my crystal ball has always been fairly cloudy).

Said no to them and Alaska in 84, still ok with the choice.

Heck if we are looking at who we turned down. I also turned down World, Cathay, and CAL. Of course, the timing was right to be able to turn these down.

Man, is there anywhere you didn't apply? :)

In the ALPA contract comparison that just came out, does anyone know why we are using America West in the comparison?

I'd hate to see a system where a junior guy got stuck with short call all month, so I like our mix of long and short calls. I just wish there was a bump up of the guarantee for each short call period. Not only do we deserve it, but we need the financial disincentive to keep the company from putting a ridiculous number of guys on short call just because they can. We also need to fix the disparity in short calls between domestic and international. Hopefully the new rest rules will fix that for us, but I'm not holding my breath.

As a reserve guy living in base I would support a system that gave credit for days on short call. Maybe 1 hr above guarantee for each short call day. We could cap the number at 8 or 10 to keep senior guys from abusing the system and us junior guys getting stuck at 70. Commuters would like it because they could do all Long Call from home. Guys like me would like it because we could make a little extra money. We could bid the Short Call days based on seniority. I've talked to several buddies, both commuter and non-commuters, and so far everyone likes the idea. You could make 70 hrs and stay home more, or you could bid short calls and make 78-80 hrs. Your choice. No more calls from scheduling at 8 pm converting you to short call the following morning. No more trying to guess when and how scheduling will influence your life on reserve.

This is just a rough idea I've been kicking around. It may have even been mentioned on here already. Someone smarter than I can probly weigh-in on how that would affect staffing, seniority issues, etc..

I am just tired of taking home 70 hrs a month and maybe $200 in per diem. We have to improve the reserve system where guys can actually make a little money if they are willing to work. I have had a standing Green slip in for over 2 years and have NEVER gotten a single one! Of course they don't go out for FO's all that often in Memphis these days, so maybe it's partly my base.

Thoughts?

Because it is very important for ALPA to selectively include data so as to portray our current contract as near the top of the industry. This is how you lower expectations.

They made the stock quote link to an internal DeltaNet page.
Can we no longer get to the Internet on lounge computers?
There's gotta be a way.

Lower right corner of the Flight Ops Homepage there is a tab titled Flight Operations Links below that is a link to Yahoo Finance....
